So a year ago, under Maradon's suggestion, I bought an EVGA GeForce 7600 GS. The card's fan started to die w/in 6 months. So for the last few months I've been using onboard (yuck) video for my web browsing fun. So I just happened to come into $100 bucks yesterday that isn't allocated to any bills and I need a new card. I was looking at bestbuy/newegg/frys and saw a BFG GeForce 8400 GS 512mb card for under $100... is this any good or should I get something else? GeForce vs Radeon?

oh, and i just found a guy selling a PNY GeForce 8600 GT 256mb near me on craigslist. Says it's still in the packaging.

What are you going to be using this card for, and what is the max resolution you run.

If you're only using it at 1280x1024 it doesn't matter what you buy. Anything from the last 2 or three gens will allow you to play 99% of the games out there at everything, but your resolution, turned all the way up.

umm, this card is cheap. Is there something wrong with it? A friend told me a GeForce 8400 series should last me awhile.

If you tried to run a modern game with medium settings at 1280x1024 you'd probably still have a lot of chop with that card.

ugh, my bad... he said an 8600 engine

I think that this should be decent. with the rebate it puts it down at the 100 area

edit: oh, how does one tell what kind of M/B one has? My computer is a Dell E521 Athlon model. That card i linked above has some kind of 6-pin pci-e power plug and I want to make sure that I can even use it. I dont see anywhere on my M/B that it can connect to. if it even needs to be connected in the first place.

At 1280x1024 you'll never come close to that card's capacity, but it is a great deal at 100 bucks.

I'm sorry Noxhil, I didn't even see your post above. That 8800GT is a good deal it looks like. I don't see my wife letting me upgrade my monitor anytime soon as we just moved and money is pretty tight. Thanks for that tip

I don't know if I'd go that far. 1280x1024 isn't exactly low-rez. I'm pretty sure if you cranked up the settings in Age of Conan or something you'd still end up with some chugging.

In any case it's still definitely a solid card.

Should I worry that it's only 256mb? I know that sooner, rather than later, games are going to need that extra bit of oomph.

256mb won't kill you.

There are 512mb cards for that price or less, but they're usually shitty cards with tons of memory packed on to them to make them seem cooler.

Scroll through the images, you'll see an adapter that will plug into one of the legacy plugs allowing you to power the card.

So I got that 8800gt listed above. It seems like a nice card. Went to nVidia and downloaded the new driver. when installed it did not allow me to go back into windows. I just got that random weird color effect you get with lcd's

any ideas? it works fine w/ the old drivers now...

I can think of a few things it might be...

Make sure you clean out the old drivers properly before installing.

Make sure you are installing the correct driver.

Often times after a new driver install, the system reverts to a simple resolution/color scheme and you're required to correct the settings in the display controls interface. It may just be a matter of correcting the resolution and color depth.

I checked Gigabyte's website for what they said were the up to date drivers, and I seem golden. Looks like nVidia's wont work with the card, which makes me kind of uneasy.

You're not too good at this.

Gigabyte's website hosts Nvidia's drivers. Just much, much older versions of them.

I'd suggest trying to reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers from their website. Just make sure you're selecting the right fields that match your computer's settings.

I never claimed to be good at it. I did download nVidia's current driver, i'll try again in case I did screw it up, and when they were installed and the computer was rebooted. The display would not turn on, but I could hear all the start up sounds, etc.

In general you shouldn't update your video drivers unless something isn't working or you're a so called "power-user." When updating your video drivers make sure you properly uninstall the previous drivers, including cleaning out old files. I remember there being some programs that do that.

the new video drivers for the GeForce 8 series from Nvidia's website will only allow me to go up to 1024x768 max resolution. when I know that it can go to 1280x1024. I'm going to go back to the factory drivers, like noxhil said, until I see a problem that requires me to change them.
