And was removed from her platoon shortly after performing the actions for which she received the honor because having people with vaginas in combat situations is against Army policy.

quote:
Santos drove to a more protected position, while Brown bandaged Smith and Spray, gave them IVs and readied them for the helicopters that arrived 45 minutes later. Brown "never looked around or anything," Robbins said. "She was focused on the patients the whole time. She did her job perfectly."

Should the policy of preventing women taking direct combat jobs in the military keep going or is it time for that one to die?

I'm not too up and up on Army policy, but rumor around where I work is that the Army's policies are getting their lines blurred when it comes to that.

That's what the article said is happening in the field, but since Brown's case actually made headlines they had to pull her or make it official that they're unofficially not following the official guidelines. Or something. Either way it seems like horse shit that a good soldier is getting pulled because of doing her job exceedingly well.

Its all politics. And its not really the military that has a problem with sending women to the front lines. Its the people back home who throw the fit.

That certainly seems to be the case with this story at the very least.

All the Marines I know despise the idea of women fighting on the front lines with them, haha.

Well, that's because if you let people with vaginas fight, and if they're any good at it, people with penii might feel less manly about their presumed studliness.

And secondly, while people might grudgingly accept their sons coming home in a body bag as one of the costs of freedom, they tend to draw the line at it being Daddy's Little Girl(tm) in the bag.

That, and the use of rape as a torture tactic is a lot easier for people to assume, even though its equally aesy to rape a man when you think about it.

It'll take a long, long time before people deny their senses enough to say that men and women are equal in every regard.
