or you know, wow. if you want other people to play with.
EQ2 if you want gay. Gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay.
EvE maybe? It's one I see enough people mention, but I'm not too crazy about spaceship stuff so I haven't played it.
Also, since I've played EQ2 to level 73 (Iksar Mystic), let me say that 50% of the game's areas are boring as fuck, and then the game tries to change into WoW from levels 68 to 80. If you do decide to play EQ2, don't go to the areas that were part of the original game. That means stick to Faydwer if at all possible, unless you're going into dungeons. Original game dungeons are actually pretty cool (whereas most Faydwer and more recent dungeons are shit). Once you get to level 68, go to Kunark and play like you were playing Warcraft. Make sure to avoid playing certain classes, or Kunark will do nothing but piss you off. For example, I played a mystic, and there were maybe 2 upgrades from the quests in the first Kunark area for me, whereas most other classes get full new suits of equipment.
I know nothing about Vanguard, and have heard good from Lord of the Rings Online, at least until you hit the level cap. Willias fucked around with this message on 02-17-2008 at 05:43 PM.

o rly?
When was the last time you played Vanguard, open beta?
The world is full of people now that they've merged the servers.
The "immense death penalty" is mostly negated when you recover your tombstone and even then it leaves a small experience debt that takes maybe 10 kills to get back.
Hyperbole much?

By this quote alone it is safe to say that Maradon knows nothing about Vanguard.
Most of the technical problems have been corrected, the game play is quite deep, and it has more content than you can shake a stick at. There is pretty much no death penalty now, just run back to the spot you died or take a res. There is no chance of losing your corpse or setting yourself back hours, 10 minutes tops and you can regain whatever you lose in EXP. There are only four servers now with the populations having been consolidated so there is no shortage of people or groups.
It is not without flaws, most of the dungeons are contested which really only creates a few bottle necks in some of the major quest lines. Quest drops are normally not shared across a group, even though in some cases they are.
The game is getting relaunched by SOE after the next big content patch which should be happening in a month or so.
Needless to say after pretty much "beating" WoW, it is a nice change of pace. I can safely recommend it to someone who is just sick of the ez-mode game play of WoW.
If you want something closer to WoW but with tighter class balance and more focus on story check out Lord of the Rings Online. They just updated their engine to support most of the DX10 features, and it is a Turbine game so new content is coming out pretty much every month.

Sometimes he is entertaining though, he makes me feel better about myself.
Running back to your grave is no simple matter, since doing quests almost always means running through a "dungeon" and since the game has no ghost system you're fighting through backspawn which is probably what killed you in the first place.
The alternative free rez damages all your equipment, which, at a lower level, completely bankrupted me.
And for how much content is allegedly in this game, I really didn't see a whole lot to do in the first 3 cities I visited. The quests peter out long before you're ready to move on to the next city leaving you blindly grinding time and time again. Fun fun.

The game sends you in a fairly straight forward progression path, and you will usually out level the content in any given area long before you complete all of it. To make things better the two larger continents have completely different progression paths, and you can bounce between them with ease. The third continent is too small to support a full progression but it has the best starting quest lines which cap out around level 15-18. The only "grinds" I have had to do in game were those involving group quests, which can get somewhat tedious and is something that needs to be fixed.
As for the death penalty, item wear has been greatly reduced. A death with corpse retrieval rarely costs more than a couple of coppers until you start getting equipped with rare items when it can get expensive. To make things even better healers can give others in their party NORENT items that allow them to res the healers if they happen to die. It is very rare for a party to TPK in a dungeon and not be able to continue.
To say it clearly, most of the really nasty stuff people complained about at launch has been fixed.
I think you are perhaps too biased against SOE to ever give any game run by them anything but a negative review. If you would give it another run, I think you might even enjoy it. Tyewa Dawnsister fucked around with this message on 02-17-2008 at 09:21 PM.
It does sound like a lot of my huge gripes with the game have gotten better, and I did like the gameplay and the environment, but I have to ask, what kind of solo content exists? I never got high enough in vanguard to know, but the classic SOE philosophy on soloing is that you can try but it'll be a nightmare with high risk and little reward.
When most people call a game "hard mode" what they really mean is that it has no solo content, and since I have neither the time nor the inclination to PUG around, the existence of solo content at every level is sorta important.

These two quotes are all you need to see that the game sucked. The game has been out a short amount of time before needing server merges and now they're relaunching the game because it shipped highly unfinished and buggy. While the latter is somewhat expected of a MMO, it definitely shouldn't be seen as a good thing that SOE needs to relaunch the game. They'd need to pull out something better than Echoes of Faydwer for Vanguard anyway, and I don't see that happening.
Just avoid MMos for now. None out are worth playing if you've tired of MMOs before.

I don't play enough to have a group regularly and I solo quests all the time (I've soloed almost entirely to level 43).
I play like 8 hours a week.

You're right.
Most of the healing classes solo extremely well since they can easily heal themselves without having to change targets in combat. Disciples, Shaman, and Clerics are especially good soloers with Bear Shaman really pulling ahead late in the game.
Other classes not so much, Sorcerers and Druids have issues soloing later in the game. Rogues and Bards can solo but the hardest stuff they have to be choosy. Monks, Warriors, Paladins, and Dread Knights just over power things with silly defensive skills and dps. They have to break between fights but they rarely have huge issues soloing.
By far, IMHO, the best soloing class in the game are Necromancers, they're kinda nuts. They have been known to solo the end game raid content if the yard trash has been cleared out.
The biggest thing with soloing is that if you run into a group quest is to advertise in a global a few times see if anyone is doing it and if not move on. None of the content is required, and there are only a few quests until the late game that are "must do this".
