Oh you're right, because there aren't directions telling you how to do it or anything, right? I mean being able to look at a picture and arrange objects in a fashion that mimics the picture is surely not a skill you learn in freaking kindergarten.

Blindy is the king and only determinant of what can and cannot be fun for everyone.
It's like comparing a paint by numbers to a fucking Picasso.

Blindy. had this to say about Optimus Prime:
There is fun and a small challenge in assembling a kit, especially a large one. But it is in no way comparable in scope to what this guy has achieved. It's like comparing a paint by numbers to a fucking Picasso.
Except you're still playing with fucking legos.
Are sculptors still "playing with clay?"

Yes, except they're using chisels and brick ovens and other things I don't think 6 year olds would have access to. Way to use bad analogies.
I don't even say it's not cool and it's not art or w/e, but honestly SOMEONE along the line had to have come up with the idea and made into a reality with the legos to build any set. Just because this guy made something cool doesn't mean you couldn't do the same exact breaking down of how to make it and package it in a box that says 10+ on it. Oh wait, that's all threads.

You're basically completely wrong here. You can make a competent custom lego model with an absolutely trivial amount of planning. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that duplicating the steps on an instruction page is actually a lot harder than coming up with your own design, because literally anything you do with legos will just work, while getting the gist of the instructions from the stylized 2d diagrams can sometimes be tricky.
They're easy to learn, easy to master. That's why they're toys.
Comparing legos to a nuanced art like sculpting where you have to worry about things like material strength, firing stress, symmetry and utility all while maintaining your aesthetic is really silly.

What the fuck. Is this really what you are trying to say? What this guy did wasn't any harder than following directions because if you made directions to produce this any 10 year old can do it? Because that's exactly what I'm saying.

I wasn't comparing legos to sculpting, I was illustrating the difference between playing with something and having to worry about things like material strength, load balance, symmetry and utility while maintaining an aesthetic, which is exactly the kind of thing that goes into producing a model of that scale, as anyone with any experience building large models with legos will tell you.
And you're an idiot if you think you could just sit down and produce a model like that one without a solid plan and not have endless hours of frustration. Blindy. fucked around with this message on 01-13-2008 at 11:10 AM.
