I like the Wikipedia entry.

quote:
Something Awful, often abbreviated to SA, was a comedy website housing a variety of content, including blog entries, forums, feature articles, digitally edited pictures, and humorous media reviews. It was created by Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka in 1999 as a largely personal website, but as it grew, so did its contributors and content. The website was influenced Internet culture[1] and helped to perpetuate several Internet phenomena.[2][3][4]

The website closed on January 2, 2008. Attempts to navigate to www.somethingawful.com and forums.somethingawful.com resulted in a Network Solutions squatter page.

I was clicking the links hoping it to be some elaborate front page prank. Oh dear.

I edited my hosts file and it starts to load the forums then redirects to the network solutions page.

Don't forget that 4chan's domain was hijacked in a very similar way a couple weeks ago.

It seems a fair number of people were never affected in the first place. Our DNS servers must have had some awful propogation rates.
