With this Christmas, i finally received some computer parts to rebuild my computer. However, after assembling it, I ran into a problem with the new hard drive as my XP CD only sees up to 137 Gb, and it is a 500 Gb drive. Is there a way to get XP to recognize it without having to upgrade to Service Pack 1, because i really don't want 2 partitions on this drive, and I am not quite sure how to merge partitions.

Just looking for some help, because i suck at these things.

Are you on pro? If so you can make them dynamic drives and get XP to treat it as 1.

Are you talking about during install or after?

If you've already got your shit installed and there's only one 137gb partition on your 500gb drive, you'll need a third party partition app like partition magic to resize the partition without erasing everything.

Well, to make it one real partition you'll need partition magic or something. But provided he is on pro, he just needs to convert both volumes to dynamic, then create a spanned volume. It will still be two partitions in reality, but as far as Windows cares it will be one drive letter.

Edit: On Home, Partition Magic or an equivalent is in fact the only way.

You could just get a SP2 disk.

We were going with legal options to start with! Since I'd imagine if he was using a pirated disc he probably just DL a SP2 disc and be done with it.

Even if there is a legal issue with pirating the media for use with your own (legal) key, it shouldn't be enough to stop you from downloading a SP2 disk
