Are you going to see The Golden Compass? From what I've heard, it seems like a movie you might enjoy.

Because I jack it to polar bear porn?

But seriously, folks. It's because it supposedly attacks the Catholic Church? Hey, I'm all for pointing out the flaws in religion, but honestly, you couldn't pay me to see this movie. The commericials/trailers look horrendous. I'm much more interested in in seeing I Am Legend, starring Will "WELCOME TO EARF" Smith.

I Am Legend will be interesting to see how its pulled off, since the book was so good...also considering that it was set in the 50s and this one is in the future...and also considering the book Robert Neville fondly recalls meeting a negro.

Doesn't even take 10 minutes for it start with the "church is evil" stuff.

Yeah, but in that universe the church -is- evil.

I hear that the movie is closer to The Omega Man than the novel. Which sucks, because the novel really can work well as a movie. Hell, you hardly need to have an SFX budget. But hey, as long as the ending is similar to the novel, I think it'll be great.

Has anyone actually seen it yet? I just beat the game in attempt to get the plot without seeing the movie, and they didn't do much of that anti-religion stuff at all (or you needed extra stuff the movie didn't transfer over to understand all the underlying stuff).

The game was bizarre in that it felt almost like a graphic adventure platforming game. It wasn't unplayable, but I had to get in a certain mindset to play it. Most people, kids including would think it's probably pretty boring, but it was just a substitution for the movie for me.

Anyways, yeah I thought this movie was gonna be crap from the start and if the game is any indication it will be. Characters you have no fucking clue about why they're there and plot holes every way you look. I don't think anything about the world was actually fully explained. This is gonna be the cash-in epic fantasy trilogy of the year. (Or it would if it actually boxed anything, which it still might. Let's wait and see!)

I watched it earlier, though I wasn't paying a lot of attention. The anti-religion stuff is definitely there, though far from heavy and pretty easily ignored. In general, it felt rushed, ended abruptly, and just seemed average at best. You're better off reading the books if you want a real explanation as to what's going on.

The polar bear duel scene was cool though.

That was a Shenmue button sequence in the game.

Yea, it was a pretty rush job movie, and it seems for 150 million dollar budget, they really could have gotten a better director than Chris Weitz(Known for his great directing work in American Pie and Down to Earth). The only scene work mentioning is the duel scene, but that is pretty much forgotten afterwards. I would say if you are good at MSTing, this movie provides ample fare, because it is simply easy to make fun of, bear puns aside. The characters are all pretty 1 dimensional, the plot jumps all over the place, it is dumbed down from the book to make it a hollywood Good V Evil fight, there are almost as many travel scenes as talking scenes, characters jump in and out all the time, any kind of puncture wound in the world is apparently instantly fatal, and the ending hits you in the face faster than the realization that the morning after when you notice the woman you took home from the bar last night is a total uggo.

I felt it was really rushed as well and was trying a little too hard to hit all the key points but not really hit them as they should have been hit. I read an interview with Weitz though and I'm willing to give the other movies a shot. He's a fan and as he put it, the important stuff is in The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass anyway, so this may have just been a necessary sacrifice to appease the studio so he can do what's important with the concepts in those two.

It's also less anti-religion and more against establishments, religious or otherwise, who try to tell people what to think and do and believe.

I would say read the book though if you want the whole story, as I saw parts that I understood perfectly well because this has long been one of my favorite series, but that I thought were a little vague in explanation for those who had never encountered the books.
