In fact we should do this on a national level
And the easy answer to why people are leaving NJ is this: it's full. At an average of ~1000 people per square mile, NJ is the most densely-populated state in the union. There's simply no more room, especially in desirable areas. By all means, go where there's room. There are plenty of hardworking, industrious immigrants to replace what spots you leave open.
But go ahead, live in your exurbs. In Jersey, we'll be sitting pretty and taking our competent mass transit when gas shortages hit and you're all riding bikes to work. Actually, that's a lie. We'll all be horribly fucked by a crippling depression, whether you ride a train or drive a car.
Finally, Philly really sucks.

Actually, Karnaj, north Jersey. Bloombury, near Phillipsburg/Easton.
You have my deepest sympathies.

It's not that bad really. Rather nice overall. Trees everywhere, Muskanetcong river in the backyard, pollen sending me into insane allergic reaction modes...
Plus all the strip malls and regular malls I can shake a stick at.

If NJ's major airport was in any other part of the state I don't think it'd have the reputation it does now. Sure, the state would be overpopulated, overtaxed, and too damned expensive, but you wouldn't have the first/only thing people see in NJ be the absolute worst portion of the state.

The entire east coast is a pretty terrible place, from what I can tell.
Yeah, I can definitely see where a West Coaster is coming from when they say the East Coast sucks. Everything's too cramped, the temperatures are too extreme, and everyone's a fucking asshole.

Over the mountain, in between the ups and downs, I ran into Karnaj who doth quote:

As opposed to the west coast where everybody's fucking an asshole.
OH SNAP

Karnaj wrote this then went back to looking for porn:

It's mostly the too cramped part, at least for me. There's zero planning when it comes to how things are laid out in the entire eastern US, whereas in the west things are far more sparse and planned out. None of this jughandle and circle and whatever else have you ridiculous business with roads.
Temperatures were already extreme where I was, fucking deserts. And everyone is an asshole out west too, you just aren't as likely to get stabbed for it.

"planning" is frequently not possible on either coast. See: San Francisco
Most places are simply forced to follow terrain without much flex room for any planning to be done.
Now where I lived in SC, Columbia, that's an example of a place where planning was possible, but not done with any level of competence.
Went into New York City last night, dear god that place has gotten worse since I've last been there.

Touche about certain places in the west, but it's overall way better planned.Went into New York City last night, dear god that place has gotten worse since I've last been there.
Let me guess; you went to Midtown.

Queens. And then we made a wrong turn on the way back and went into Harlem! We made friends with nice black people who wanted to kill us.
