For me, I can think of dozens;
Sam & Max
the Wing Commander series.
TIE Fighter. heck, most of the games from the golden age of space sims
the first Quake
Baldur's Gate
Fallout 1 and 2
just off the top of my head
maybe I should go find these somewhere
The only good actraiser was the first, when it still had city building and shit. They should have built that up instead of eliminating it
EDIT: Phantasy Star 2 and 3 were pretty good... I never played 1 or 4. Arttemis fucked around with this message on 06-22-2007 at 09:40 PM.
I am truly the gaming messiah.
Anyway, I haven't played either Fallout 1 or 2, yet eagerly await Fallout 3. Maybe I should go online and buy them somewheres. Shouldn't be too expensive.
Baldur's Gate 1 was kind of boring. I couldn't really get into it. That and I'm kind of obsessive in RPGs, and nothing pisses me off more than fucking bears that can kill you in two hits. The main bad guy also doesn't seem as cool as Baldur's Gate 2's where Irenicus is total douche from the very beginning. Making him die was possibly one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a video game. And then I couldn't get into the expansion pack. arg I guess I should try and get those going again, and see if I can actually sit down and complete the series. Why is it that so many people eagerly await this, yet people everywhere admit to never having played it?
That's about all

It's a popular PC RPG. Most RPG players stick to consoles.
And I guess early FF games but they're pretty fucking awful imho

Are you seriously going to try to tell me that more people have played Fallout or Morrowind over Final Fantasy? Most "gamers" are pretty much weeaboos, as Faz stated. It's not whether they're better or not because most of them are totally different RPGs. But that IS what most people think of when you say the genre.
And this has nothing to do with MMORPGs, which is a totally different genre. Mr. Gainsborough fucked around with this message on 06-23-2007 at 08:36 AM.

Loose as it was, Morrowind DID have a story. Several, in fact.
I dont miss out on games so much as I mourn what games should have been. The Might and Magic series should have been so much better. Stonekeep should have had a sequel. Gabriel Knight should still be going strong. We need more Monkey Island games.
Oh yeah, Ultima series should never have ended with a game as crappy as Ascension.

Ah, I see your defintition of RPG players is "Final Fantasy players and Japanese". In that case you are absolutely correct of course.
Most RPGs that come out are console games and CRPGs, outside of MMORPGs, really don't sell all that well. Even classics like Fallout 1/2 and Planescape: Torment sold poorly. Hell, outside of Bioware and Bethesda games how many non-MMORPG CRPGs do you see released these days? Console or portable RPGs are far more common and sell far better.

Yeah, the best in that series were probably 4-6 and HoMM 3. If only the rest had been more like that. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was interesting, but the story was a piece of shit and there were parts of combat that were just infuriating (like not being able to block on stairs, or just getting injured from being in the premise of an enemy).

Ah, I see you are being unable to comprehend? Console game sales completely dwarf PC game sales. So your average gamer thinks JRPG when you say RPG. By numbers, an AVERAGE RPG player is going to be a console RPGer. Leaving PC RPGs to a much smaller audience no matter how good the games are.

And yeah, I hear great things about the first Actraiser, not so much about the second though.
I also should add the Ultima series and Meridian 59. I never did play those. LeMiere fucked around with this message on 06-23-2007 at 01:21 PM.
