The only reason I am considering getting one now is that I was told that soon they will no longer be backwards compatible. Is there any truth to this?

That's retarded. Whoever told you that is retarded. Nay, fucking retarded.
I would not recommend purchasing one at present time due to a lack of worthwhile exclusives.

That doesn't mean that it won't be BC, of course, but they just changed the method
Edit: next year should be a big year for the Playstation 3. Right now there's not enough high quality software available to make it a worthwhile purchase Kegwen fucked around with this message on 05-04-2007 at 08:27 PM.
FFXIII is up in the air for exclusivity, and as much as I love Metal Gear, I'm not sure if it will move enough systems to make it look worthwhile for developers to look at again.
I can't speak for the majority of retailers either, but the Gamestop I worked at did not care for the PS3. We couldn't sell them, nobody was interested in them.
Your money would be far better spent on a 360 or a Wii, if you want any of the newest systems at all.

To one that is even better, because they can now upscale to higher resolutions. It's one of the reasons I'd wait before picking up a PS3; imagine Snake Eater in 1080.
The 360 is already looking up to be the next PS2, with many good titles out already, and the current best online service. The day Square ports to 360 is the day Sony's console legacy goes the way of the Dreamcast. And it'll happen even faster if Kojima decides to join in.
So yeah. Definitely wait. It's absolutely not worth the price tag at the moment, even if you're rolling in moneybags.

Very much incorrect. The FF13 world series will be multiplatform. However, the main game and Versus will be PS3 exclusive. Not that it's much concern. The quality of FF13 is probably going to be extremely low due to Square-Enix overextending themselves with the multiple titles for it. As well as working on the new Tactics game, the Tactics port, Kingdom Hearts III, Dragon Quest XI, Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearer, and whatever other titles I might have left out. I'll remind you that I was right about Devil May Cry 4, which had far less to go on for exclusivity than that.
Still, that being said, Square is going to go where the money is. Sony's performance is dismal in terms of market penetration in all three markets. X-Box may not be selling well in Japan, but in America and Europe it's doing considerably better.

Well, you're forgetting that Square-Enix is a Japanese company. And they're pretty loyal to their country in terms of business. They aren't going to easily go against what Japan favors, even if it means the rest of the world dislikes what they choose to do. Atleast, not with their main titles.
Except that the PS3 is doing shittily in Japan as well. I don't have the exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure I read that it's doing WORSE than it is in America.

No, I said Square-Enix is a Japanese company, one that is pretty loyal to their native fans. Not all Japanese companies in general, tranny. I specifically named them, because it specifically pertains to their business practices. Jesus, you're fucking dumb. Skaw fucked around with this message on 05-05-2007 at 04:59 AM.

To be fair, the construction of your sentence leave the antecedent of "they" unclear.

The rest of the post should've made it clear. Not many developers spread their franchise name over many seperate titles.

Actually, I can think of quite a few. It's also a recurring statement in console threads that Japanese developers usually stay on Japanese consoles. I don't feel like bringing up examples, as obviously you're too immature to discuss something without resorting to personal attacks that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. Your hostility and closedmindedness are clouding your judgement.
Grow up.

As Rachel. And new weapons.
Yeah, it's the same core game--why would they change it? It was nearly perfect except for some niggling camera problems.
Them sticking to that fugly price tag doesn't help the case for the PS3, either. They've launched a game system that starts higher than the competitors AND won't have games worth playing until the second year it's up? yeesh. Why bother.
