And they've got the molecular evidence to prove it!

Next step: Jurassic Park, or not really.

"Distant Cousin?"

When you make things that vague, you might as well say everythings linked to something.

That's pretty much the case, however what they're saying is far more specific.

The T-Rex is the "distant cousin" of the chicken in the manner that primordial apes are the "distant cousins" of humans. The two species lie on the same evolutionary tree.

Wouldn't that be more of a distant grandfather/son? The primordial apes deal that is. I'd say right now, Humans and current Apes are distant cousins, stemming from the same predecessor at some point in time.

If the article hadn't mentioned direct descendency elsewhere I would be inclined to agree, but in this case I'm pretty sure it's just poor word choice.

The point of the paper is actually discussing genome sizes--it was previously assumed that a smaller genome in an amniote is a characteristic of flight. Birds generally have relatively small genomes, while non-flying birds have somewhat larger ones.

Their research has shown that the small genome size has nothing much to do with flight, as it was a characteristic that had evolved in the ancestoral dinosaurs--just like feathers, strange avian pulmonary plumbing, and certain patterns of nesting behaviour.

As for the relation of Tyrannosaurus rex to the chicken, it's a somewhat more distant phylogenetic relationship than, but roughly equivalent to that between the duck-billed platypus and Homo sapiens.

So, how much for one drumstick? (I'll bet it'll cost more than a 20 piece bucket!!!)

pretty much just additional confirmation that birds are directly descended from dinosaurs also fun for me is that next to dinosaurs the group of animals closest genetically to birds is crocodiles, and interestingly a large chunk of behavior in both groups probably predates the branching off point, a big example being nesting behavior, and vocal communication.
