That's an airburst, right?

A friend of mine has a documentary on nuclear weaponry, and it's pretty cool. That is, if it wasn't heralding the destruction of the human race.

I thought all nukes were done as airbursts

Nope, until they found a way of making smaller payloads, they were all "ground" based, about 100 feet in the air. The first H-bombs were massive devices that took up something the size of an apartment building.

Depends upon the effects one is looking for. An airburst maximizes EMP, a ground burst maximizes blast effects, and an underground burst maximizes fallout.

Hmm for some reason I remember being taught that airburst maximized the thermal effects of the bomb?

I have some fun facts for you...

That particular image I believe was taken in 1953 in Nevada, the test name was "Harry" and ganking from the book my Gentleman Friend bought me (100 Suns by Michael Light if you're interested)...

"...Frozen approximately 0.0001 seconds after detonation, before the blast has engulfed the tower. The surface mottling and irregularity is a result of high-velocity bomb debris "splashing" against the backside of the slightly slower expanding fireball, which glows due to compression heating of the surrounding air."

Also, only one colour photograph of the very first nuclear test survives due to the light intensity blistering film. Indeed in some black and white images you can see the explosion itself is solarised.

Don't ask me why i'm interested in such things, I just am.
