Takes way too long to load into a game. The save system is clunky (Sean reports no quicksave), the initial bindings are stupid (L for flashlight!). The combat mechanics also seem extremely wonky, but I didn't run in to too much of a problem with it. It seems extremely "realistic". You can only take a few shots starting out before you're eating dirt. Perhaps this gets better with time!
I'll probably end up playing a bit more. Sean's reaction to the game, however, was nothing short of violent. He'll weigh in soon, no doubt.
Currently: 2.5/5

not so much
Or rather, a giant steaming pile of shit has landed in my lap. "Six years of development? Surely they've refined it into a thing of beauty!" No.
I don't have any idea what sort of money was sunk into this thing, but I know where most of it went; cocaine straws and lighting cigars. I'm gonna make a short list here because fuck it I love making lists:
Load times and performance on Vista seem entirely random. Black runs an nVidia card, I use ATI. He's dual core, I'm single. If we raced our load times I doubt we'd see much a difference, but my performance (at 1440x900 to his 1680x1050) is remarkably better. Chalk it up to poor Vista driver support on his behalf.
I'd post some screenshots, but the screenshot button does not seem to work.
He's playing it again to try and have a positive experience. I may give it a longer trial later, but I haven't been to sleep yet.

A sleep deprived Greenlit stammered:Lack of quicksave, autosave, and a quickload feature. Deus Ex, released a year before this was ever announced handles your repeated deaths better than this.
F6/F7 for quicksave and load. It autosaves when you change zones
I'll borrow it from a friend.
Yes.. Friend.. ¬_¬

Hey look at that quicksave and quickload.
If only that was documented anywhere, shown in the tutorial, or even listed in keybindings.
It's... Boring.

I think I know your friend... is his first name Bit?

The logic train ran off the tracks when Blackened said:We waited 249 years for this? Maybe it's just that I'm running Vista (sigh), or the fact I'm playing at 1680x1050 but the game runs like shit with all settings at the lower. Still manages to look decent, however.
I'm not sure about how it runs in Vista, but it runs relatively well on my system with everyone on high but shadows. If you're having performance issues, try turning down shadows or change to static lighting. Those items seem to be the key to performance.

Initial load takes awhile. Quickloading doesn't take too long for me

It does indeed get better. You'll get better armor and find artifacts. A couple hours in and you'll be able to find health +200%/400%/600% artifacts that increase your lifespan a ton too.

There was much rejoicing when Greenlit said this:
It's ugly. There's no two ways about that; Oblivion does environments better, and something as (relatively) old as Half-Life 2 is leaps and bounds ahead in character and prop detail.
Environments aren't anything special, but is there really much you can do with post-apocalyptic Russia? I find the lighting to be better than Oblivion/HL2 though.

Combat is.. I don't know. I had considerable difficulty on the very first mission on the next to highest difficulty. Your accuracy with the default pistol is comparable to a crippled infant. I later found a silenced pistol that was much more serviceable.
The difficulty curve makes it overly hard at the start. Once you start getting better equipped, it gets a bunch easier.
If you're feeling a bit weak, you may want to just skip ahead to the second town (just keep going north basically). Once you're there, go north one more zone and speak to the Duty members to the area right of the start of the zone. The second mission they have puts you into a huge base assault that is hard as hell, but great fun and allows you to pick up a bunch of good weaponry. Makes things a bunch easier.
The game is rough around the edges and takes a bit to get into, but I like it. Considering the lack of good shooters as of late it is probably worth playing. Definitely up in the air if you want to buy it though.
I feel there is no reward waiting for me if I continue on with this game.
Edit - played it for another hour, there's not. Will be uninstalling after this edit. Blackened fucked around with this message on 03-21-2007 at 01:49 PM.
I think I'll just wait until someone finds the godmode trigger in the command interface then run around ploinking people in the head with my knife for a laugh.
