I'd have to agree for the most part, but in Beyond the Black River he didn't really have any ulterior motive and was pretty much a hero. He wasn't nearly as heroic as Balthus and the dog though.

Also, Conan was never meant to be either a "hero" nor a selfish bastard. He has his own set of morals, those which he learned from his tribe. He uses his strength to enforce these on others, haha. Another example of him being neither heroic nor selfish is when he killed the king of Aquilonia, then decided not to expand his empire after he usurped the throne.
