Topic: Can't host games or ping people since I moved

I play alot of Warcraft 3 with my friend and his ISP won't let him host games (they don't show up on the game list for some reason), so I naturally was the host. Three days ago I moved into an apartment building and simply plugged the RJ45 cable into the wall socket and I had the net working. When I went to play a game with my friend, he couldn't join my game anymore. When I went into a game he created, I could no longer ping him but he could ping me.

Is there something I can do that will let me host games again?

What sort of ISP is this? If you're using a DSL or cable modem, there may be a firewall in the firmware blocking hosting ports.

Do you have a cable modem in your apartment, or is your internet connection provided by the building?

Ah. You're on a LAN and behind a firewall, most likely, and have no publicly-accessible IP address, so there's no way for others to make a connection to you.

Can this be fixed?

Probably not. The building people probably don't want people hosting websites or torrent trackers in their apartments, so they're most likely going to blocking most, if not all, inbound ports. There are definitely ways to set it up, but you'd need the cooperation of the building to do so, and I doubt they'd give that to you.

The only other way I could think of fixing this is to get your own private internet, be it cable or DSL. Then, you'll have your own IP address and be able to host to your heart's content.

I actually had a similar problem a while back, and thought it was my ISP (MTS). It turns out that it was actually my router blocking all hosting ports. Making myself the DMZ fixed the problem I was having.

I don't think Shaw would have a firewall on their modems; I have a friend that gets cable from Shaw, and he can host games just fine. It's probably something in your apartment building's LAN, such as a router, causing the problem.

In other words, unless you can somehow access your building's router/whatever and change some settings, you might be screwed.

[EDIT: Fuck, beaten.]

You sucked that whole game until the end, and then you only got that many kills because they were fucking retarded.
