In the shadow of Saturn, unexpected wonders appear. The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn recently drifted in giant planet's shadow for about 12 hours and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn and slightly scattering sunlight, in the above exaggerated color image. Saturn's rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the above image. Visible in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn's E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus, and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, visible on the image left just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth.

I love this line. It's like something pulled straight from a sci-fi novel.

Some similarities, but no. I don't play Party Poker. And there are no folders full of meticulously-categorized gay porn.

The propaganda machine of Kait's junta released this statement:
Fascinatingly insane. ...Anyone know offhand how long it takes an image from Saturn to reach Earth?
At least 71 minutes or so, depending where the planets are in their orbits, and not counting how long it actually takes to transmit the data.

Pulling a numbers out of my ass about 55 min. to maybe 110 min right now. I am thinking since Satrurn takes about 30 years to make an orbit, higher depending were we are reltive.

okay not so much pulling out of my ass, Big Fat Sat. is about 10 AU from the sun, Earth sit at 1 AU takes light about 8 min to travel 1 AU so the numbers are more like between 72 and 88 minutes. ..Go Go useless Astronomy knowledge.

Ah, so not long at all. Makes me wonder how often Saturn is eclipsed? It's still rather fascinating, how lucky that was. The fact that the rings are spinning so fast as to leave it a vague blur looks too surreal. It looks like a poorly rendered 3D animation, not a photocapture from real life.

To get that picture the probe just has to be positioned so that Saturn is between it and the sun.
And that blur isn't motion blur. It's another ring that is lower density then the others. Naimah fucked around with this message on 12-04-2006 at 04:15 PM.

Speaking of moons, where the hell are they in the photo? Surely they could be seen at that range, especially if we can see Earth...

The color fuckery might have washed them out, but if you saw them, they would just be bright dots in the picture. Remember, Big Fat Sat is fucking huge, it has weather systems that are bigger than our planet.

quote:If you look in the outermost ring, there are a few dots big enough to fit that description. The easiest to discern are a black dot and a white dot on the near left portion of the ring. There's also a black dot in the gap between two of the bright inner rings, at the far right, which would make sense for a moon that has cleared most of the debris in its path.
