I've been using a 17" Viewsonic for about 5 years now, but now my space has become a bit cramped in my new place. I want to get an LCD screen but I've never looked at them before.

What is a durable brand out there. I keep hearing about dead pixels on them and well, I don't want that. I want to get around a 19" or 20".

Samsung is supposed to be pretty good, 20" runs around 350 on newegg. I've one I got at Circuit City by LG. Pretty decent, cost only 300 bucks and doesn't have any dead pixels.

It worries me that they don't list a response time...

anyway this is ~$70 less and has the same specs.

As far as burned out pixels go, you're thinking of earlier LCD panels. Nowadays their durability rivals that of good CRT's.

Samsung, Sony, and Westinghouse are all very good brands in my experience.

Dell monitors work very well. I don't know what the response time on my 20" is, but I've never had a problem with it.

I second Maradons Endorsement of the Samsung 204B. I am running two on my G5 and they have always performed flawlessly.

When you're talking about a LCD screen there are many different ways to measure the response time. There is the time it takes to go from black to color, from color to color, and from color to black. Most of the screens out there that you see saying 2-5 ms response time are only taking about the color to color, the time when reponse time has the smallest effect on visibility. Black to color and color to black is when you see the most ghosting.

It's the average of these three numbers that you want to look at, and dell, along with a few other OEMs, are the only people who actually report that.

16ms response time is enough for a 62.5 hz refresh rate, which is perfectly fine.

Also, I've got the samsung 205BW on my work computer and a dell 2005FPW (the previous model of that linked Dell) on my home computer, and the Dell is a much much nicer moniter. I'd pay 70 bucks extra for the better construction alone.

I use the 24" Dell widescreen, it's fucking awesome. While that's larger than what you want, I just have to give Dell a big thumbs up, they make superb monitors. I'd go so far as to say some of the best on the market.

You sure Dell makes them and that they are not just rebranded? In the past Samsung, Hitachi and Sony have been their vendors. I like my
HP f2105. it cost me $400.00 awhile back and is likly less now.

Last I heard the actual panels used in the Dell and Apple monitors were the same. And both brands are generally well liked.

If you have patience Dell will throw out some very nice deals every so often. If you are a goon, keep an eye on the Deals forum. Will usually show up in there.

If you're going to consider the 19 inch Dell, you might want to take this BenQ into consideration. It's got nothing but praise, and is highly recommended by the Anandtech community. I'm going to get one myself when I have enough spare money around.

We've got a ton of these BenQs around here (you missed the $30 MIR), and they're very good and very cheap, and I've been using one for 2 weeks plugging through Oblivion.

I might recommend instead a Samsung 205Bw, as it has HDCP that I believe the 2007FPW lacks.

e: Oh you already orded... well best of luck... usually the Dells go down a bit lower in price if you get them at the right point in the cycle. They're very nice monitors.

Ordered myself a Samsung SyncMaster 930BF on Monday. It's a 19" screen that was highly recommended. Could have went for a 20,1" widescreen variant, but I didn't want to shell out 100 Euros more just for a widescreen. Can't see any advantage yet.

I've noticed a big advantage when watching either DVD's or other formats filmed in widescreen, such as Stargate SG-1.

I don't even watch movies on my TV anymore since I got the widescreen monitor for my computer.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piña coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

Viewsonic just released a monitor with a 5ms response time. I have it at work and it't not too badly priced.

Go viewsonic or dell or samsung. Sonys are nice too but cost too much for what you get.

Optiquest is actualy viewsonic if you see one.

Isn't it awesome? So much usable space. Step 2 is to reduce your UI scale so you have a fuck ton of viewable area.
