Is the combat as painfully tedious as Xenosaga Episode II's?

No.
It's actually quite enjoyable. Generic, but it's very fun. Especially E.S. battles.

I have just one question to decide whether I care to finish the series or not.
Psst. The series has seven episodes. Not three. You won't get to finish it unless Square takes it back over.
Since any further episodes were cancelled, III is effectively the end, and they've wrapped up loose ends in consequence.
To answer your question though, the combat system has been dumbed down and sped up. With the Erde Kaiser spell line most combat is pretty simple actually. Even not abusing Erde Kaiser, most battles are pretty easy and go quick. Some of the later boss battles can take a bit, but it's not nearly as bad as II.

Psst. Square had nothing to do with Xenosaga and the third game shows that there's a difference between Xenogears and the Xenosaga universes, even though they're quite similar (and could be one universe). They left the story open enough that they could go another four games, though it'll never happen unless III sells very well by some miracle.

I know this. The reason the universes are slightly different is due to various legal issues like copyrights. I read somewhere, that I've since lost, that Square-Enix had re-aquired some or most of the original Xenogears/Xenosaga team because Namco canned them (There won't be a Namco-produced episode 4 regardless of episode 3's sales, btw, unless a freaking miracle occurs). Take that as you will. I'm not getting my hopes up, though.

Actually, Namco said that if III sold well enough they'd consider extending the series. The chances of that happening are nil though.
I don't have the patience for RPG secret hunting anymore. Xenosaga II's fights were pushing the limit already, what with having to cast elemental Sword spells and charge about four times per random, non-boss fight. Nina fucked around with this message on 09-15-2006 at 06:50 PM.
Xenosaga encompasses Episode I (despite being named Eps I-III), Xenogears encompasses Episode V and summarizes II (First generation of humans from Deus), III (Zeboim era) and IV (Solaris era).
The unknown at this point is VI.

Six episodes actually, in the Perfect Works timeline.Xenosaga encompasses Episode I (despite being named Eps I-III), Xenogears encompasses Episode V and summarizes II (First generation of humans from Deus), III (Zeboim era) and IV (Solaris era).
The unknown at this point is VI.

Oh right, 6. I know that Xenogears is next-to-last, I just generally think 7.
