So I want a new game to mess with. MMO, I mean.
I've considered RF Online, but am not sure. Anyone else playing something that isn't WoW that is pretty fun?
They've partnered with GameTap for it though. Not sure your stance on paying for emulation, but they made no suggestion of a seperate online fee when it goes live, so you'll just pay GameTaps $10 subscription.

EvE Online has been a blast so far. Especially being part of Goonfleet and all the drama/tension that has gone along with it these last couple of months.
It seems like it would be fun for that, but I can't get myself to push past the tutorial -- it makes the game feel so dull and is entirely too long to enjoy :/

I'd wait a few months for the new owners of that game to get thier shit together before even thinking of trying it.
Essentially, they've switched billing methods, and for a few days, their account information/billing page wasn't protected. At all. Anyone could connect to the page and see what information was being sent to and from there.

Yeah, EQ2. The nice thing is that you can play it casually or you can play it hardcore. There's flexibility in playstyles and there are things to do for everyone.
Nope.

Well, there are things to do for those who don't mind playing it, have a computer that can run it, and don't mind putting up with SOE.

It's actually not a bad game, and in the past few months, SOE has really only made the game better.
However, because of what happened with SWG (and EQ1 in many people's minds) and the fact that EQ2 wasn't really good at launch, most people will never touch it.

It also has to do with the fact that any time SoE smells success, they start fucking shit up immensely.

SWG should have been, by all rules of logic, absolute gold.
I was mostly aiming that comment at the NGE though. I'm not sure what smelled of success about that, but I don't think I've heard anything about SWG since it was released.

They didn't have (and still don't have) a plan or a vision for the game. They're LucasArts' whipping boy and LS doesn't have a clue what direction the game should go either.
When it was made, it was made for the Expanded Universe crowd, the real Star Wars enthusiasts, then LucasArts shit all over it by using it as a marketing tool for the prequels. Just look at the alpha and the beta of the game, it was pretty amazing and had a lot in it that didn't make release (and still hasn't, like the AT-AT's which WORK but look stupid when they turn around because they use mob monster code and not dedicated vehicle coding, hello lazy devs). Though it was more like a sandbox (which is what the Star Wars crowd WANTED in the first place ffs), so they put "fun" things to do in it and most of those were crap.
SOE isn't totally to blame since they're bound by contract to do whatever LucasArts tells them to do to SWG, though they're not completely blameless either since they have "artistic license" in following LucasArts' plans.
.. and I think they hired retards as their programming staff. Not just people I'm calling retards. Real retards. Drooling over the keyboards from wheelchairs. They can't seem to code a single thing into the game without breaking at least fifty other things at the same time. It's hopeless and a lost cause, nothing can save it unless it's torn down and recoded by another company from the ground up. Mortious fucked around with this message on 08-10-2006 at 12:55 AM.

I still think that LucasArts pushed SOE to do the NGE. I find it hard to believe that even SOE would do that to a game without being forced to.
And the retards comment reminds me of EQ1 back in the day. Every patch has a few bug fixes and twice as many bugs!

Which is sort of the underlying problem with SOE: so long as they're on top, they stop caring.
Recall the customer service of EQ. Recall the hundreds of problems with Kunark (namely Rangers), and remember what sort of help was forthcoming for a highly-documented, well-supported problem: "Fuck you, pay me."
SWG had a fairly devoted fanbase, actually. They had one thing: the only viable futuristic, non-medieval MMOG...further, the only MMOG about Star Wars. Frickin' STAR WARS! So yeah, they had the only fix in town and stopped caring about their junkies.
Say what you want about WoW, but at least they listen to their fanbase more often than SOE did. Keyrings? Talent reviews? New dungeons?
The problem now is they don't really listen to the casual gamers any more. It's all raids now :\

Can't disagree with that. And that's probably why EQ2 is sucking less and less with every patch. They aren't the top dogs anymore, and WoW has definately hurt their subscription base. To get new subscribers, they have to make their game as good as it can get.
And again, the top dog point is pretty funny, because SOE thought that they would be with EQ2, and even today they're still fixing crap that they didn't give a shit about during EQ2's launch and first expansion pack.
The raid thing is the main reason I quit WoW. 5 mans and small raids (like, 2 groups) are fun because you really aren't limited on what you can do with your character. In a raid you have to focus on certain aspects of your character, which you don't necessarily get to pick, and as a class that gets heals it really sucks. No, I'm not saying it is bad or anything -- lots of people are having fun with it. Just isn't quite for me right now
But, with that said, I'll probably give it another shot soon. See if I can stick to it this time. Falaanla Marr fucked around with this message on 08-10-2006 at 12:10 PM.

Have you played Toribash?
Awesome fighting game, you'd love it. (free)
It's not something people hear about.
I am getting really tired of the same old zappy spells and swords games, I want my laser rifle and stormtroopers dangit ;P I had a ton of fun schlepping around with my elite commando troopers and my ATST.

I've got my hopes up about that too. When I first heard of Warhammer online I heard it from someone who said it was going to be 40k and I was very happy, then I heard it was just going to be another fantasy MMO and was not so excited.

Actually, I think it's more to do with the "oh, we're not going to allow you to really see what kind of character you chose to play until you get to level 30-ish" thing that EQ2 has going. Though it ain't nearly as bad as it was back when the game was Archetype->Class->Subclass.
It's annoying. I have fun with a summoner type character until 24-ish, then I start getting bored.
That and the low level zones are boring as hell. Though the Adventure Yards and Commonlands are FAR better than they were a few patches ago. The massive quest chain in CL is the freakin' win. Every outdoor zone should have something like it.
