Topic: Drivers: Have you tried saving gas?

Simple enough: have you consciously tried to streth your mpg (or l/100Km), and have you been successful?

I use mass transit to get to work anyway, but when I do drive my truck, I've taken to shortshifting between 500-750 RPM for each gear. The downside? My already slow truck is now painfully slow, and I can't do it all the time (like entering a highway). The upside? Keeping the motor below 2800 RPM has given me a couple extra MPG around town. While that doesn't sound like a lot, it is a 10% increase in my fuel economy.

I usually only remember to do that when I'm low on gas.

Just a few simple habits though can make a huge difference. You'd be suprised how far you can coast with a car's momentum, heh.

Yeah, if I make a real effort my little truck will get about 21mpg in the city, and I've measured as much as 28mpg Highway(65mph FTW). It's rated for 18/22

When I first got my Excursion I was careful with the gas and averaged 15 mpg, then I got tired of driving that way and now I get 12. Its hard to only go 65mph on the interstate and to never let your RPM's go over 2k in the city.

The only real effort I've made is trying to avoid the 27 mile drive back to my dad's house unless I really need to go over there (from Edmond to Yukon is like 1/4 of a tank, almost.)

My car door is fucked up, and I have to climb over my console right now, so I need to get back over there soon. X_X

I ride my bike a lot more. That's about all I can do, because I can't afford a new car. My current gets mid-20s MPG, and I can live with that. Considering it's 18 years old and a V6, anyway.

I avoid driving my own car as much as possible. I tend to hitch rides with my friends whenever possible.
I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piƱa coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

I'm too lazy to drive well so I usually just carpool, ride a bike, or take a train. When I do drive it's in an automatic and the only fuel saving techniques I use are slow starts and dodging red lights.

Nope.

I drive up steep hills and leave the air conditioning on constantly.

I think my tires might also be slightly low but I honestly haven't checked.

No, but I don't really drive much. It's a 98 with just over 60k miles on it. Except for work, I go out barely at all.

I get mid 30's without really trying and I don't drive that often so gas prices don't really affect me that much. So no, I havn't changed my driving habits in the least.

I drive 4,200 miles a month as a delivery driver. At the end of this month I'll be driving near 4,000 miles from Washington to New Hampshire in the span of ten days.

So, to answer your question, no. Not really.

I used to have the same problem with my old truck not getting enough MPG, so the best possible solution I found was to sell the damn thing and buy a nice efficient car(woo woo ford focus).

though the new car that is boast claims to 41mpg is awesome and I can't wait till we get our over fuel efficiency starts getting closer to the triple digits, or until gas drops back down to below $2 a gallon, $3.19 is pissing me off.

Gas is $2.90 around the Portland area. (Not that this is a bargain, I'm just comparing)

I'm stuck about 22-26 miles from work/school, for many reasons. I drive an Impala, and get about 20-32mpg depending on traffic conditions on the freeways, seeing as that is all I really drive. I drive on the side streets to avoid traffic which eats more gas than actually using it to move... plus I average 70-75mph to keep up with traffic, as also it's nearenough to the point of best mpg for time spent and distance (actuall being about 37mph(city) or 77mph(Hwy) for my impala). So yes I spen alot of time doing the math for my car which take $45 to $50 to fill once a week.

Nope. I've been driving as much as ever, and enjoying the looks of envy where filling my car costs thirty dollars, while theirs costs eighty or more.

I only fill up once a month at most, due to not driving and having a nice, efficient, small car (Scion xA).

I've started shortshifting out of habit, though. I need to keep better track of my mileage.

I got it around the first of January and just recently crossed the 2k mark on the odometer.

I have not seen the F mark on my gas gauge in over a year.

I just pump gas until I reach a point where that is all I feel like spending today Gotten upwards of $60 just for 3/4ths of a tank x_x

Trying my best to keep the usage down, but sometimes I feel like I need a refinery following me

My sweetie and I bought a tire gauge the other day, and discovered our rear tires were at 10psi! It just didn't show because they're low-profile! We're getting noticeably better milage now.
