WoW's lag has been gawd awful of late, so I've been looking for a private DAoC server to play on, all I've turned up is French, Spanish or die hard PvP ones.

Do you duders know of any?

Or perhaps does anyone still play on the live servers? That would also be cool.

DAoC was a pretty fun game.

I wonder why it didn't get off the ground enough to provide enough competition to EQ.

I have no idea either, I did enjoy it a lot more than I did EQ.

My take on it, from what I've heard, is that the PvE experience was far too repetitive compared to EQ's. But they did have some great points. Hoping WAR online ends up as good.

I may still have an active account, with characters on Guinevere server.

Actually, yeah.

DAoC's PvE game was quite a bit more repetitive than EQ's.

I think the worst thing about DAoC however, is the way you move in game. I tried the game again, only finding myself bored because every time I'd turn, I'd slow down to a crawl. Strafe? Slow down to walk speed. That and as you move your speed slowly builds up to max speed.

It's annoying, and detracts from the fun of the game.

DaoC was tons of fun. I loved doing the Battlegrounds and taking over the main fort (Its been 2 years since I played, I forgot most the lingo.) The only downside I really can recall from the game was there wasn't a lot to do in the end. When people say, "WoW doesn't start till 60" It's the truth, at 60 you're welcome to the endgame experience of raiding the bosses.

I might of been on the wrong server, but I had a 50 Necromancer. The only time I really raided anything was when doing the Dragon of Albion (Spellcheck, yo). After that it was just regular battleground and PvP action. I think the reason WoW took off was because theres still more to do, and when we reached the hardest bosses in the game. WoW realized it, and said they'll on-go that cryptic adventure with an expansion.

Grinding to 50 in daoc was the most tedious thing I have ever done in a game to date.

The battlegrounds are solid funsauce though

Yeah, that was the best part of DAoC. The PvP was pretty damn good.

Grinding to cap in most any MMO is boring as fuck. Even in WoW -- you end up going through a large chunk of the zones the first time through, then you have Horde side and boom, you've seen most of the zones.

What makes or breaks MMOs most of the time and what they'll be judged by by the majority is the end game.

And that's where DAOC faltered. If it had a robust PvE endgame while also having PvP/RvR, it'd still be doing exceptionally well today.

DAoC's problem boils down to having too much PvE for the PvP people, and too much PvP for the PvE people.

They've fixed this, catering more to the RvR side as time goes on, but it was too late to make them into anything but a niche.

Yeah but least in WoW I never had to just sit down at one spot and grind mobs over and over for days on end. Always had new quests to do in a new zone.

Grinding those lawn gnomes in daoc for weeks was... beyond horror

Yeah exactly. All the classes seemed practically identical for half the game also. PvP mostly consists of having a small koboldistic dwarven creature jogging around by himself while 500 invisible assassin rogues wait for someone to attack him.

I got through the tomtes/gnomes/whatever in about 10 hours though. Not a whole lot of grinding there.

Actually, I recall Faz playin' DaoC with me a long while ago. We were both.. Midgard. We were fairly low though, he was just starting up.

I can't even begin to remember that, but it probably did happen because I only play Midgard, ha ha.

Edit: Oh wait no I remember now. I have vague recollection of jogging 20 miles out into a forest just to get stomped by a bunch of NPCs 10 levels higher than us.

I tried Catacombs when it came out... it made me want to get back into the game. But as was already stated, it came too late... the playerbase just isn't there anymore.

Compared to WOW, playing as anything but my Vamp felt like I was trying to fight in a giant bowl of jello. Sluggish movement, and the environment scale compared to player size made me kinda barfy feeling.

But I still log in from time to time to play with my girlie and her mom.. makes /send michans into /gu fun for the whole family, lemme tell ya..

Yes haha exactly, and compared to something like City of Heroes where you jump at about 50 MPH (literally) around the area in the middle of fights, it left something to be desired.

EA puts out games that are quite good but extraordinarily painful. (e.g., Battlefield 2 with its million hour load times, Sims 2 with its micromanagement or time sinking)

Yeah, I'm not sure why they force you to sit through the entire "IN THE LAND OF MORDOR" intro before you're allowed to start the game.
