Seattle public schools redefine racism as "The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites)."

Haha, oh yeah, they also state that you can be a racist without even knowing it.

More ammo for the old white guilt magic ray gun that puts an immediate end to all debate from white people!

Racism as it is taught in school is primarily driven by white guilt, not any real desire to explain racism. This is neither news nor something prone to spur any interesting argument since everyone can agree that it's retarded.

Well it IS a good example of how the misconceptions of the nature of racism are an ongoing problem that is growing to be more and more institutionalized!

Looks like they got a little too much backlash from the public on this one. If you check out the SPS website they now have up:

quote:
In response to the numerous concerns voiced regarding definitions posted on the Equity & Race website, we have decided to revise our website in a way that will hopefully provide more context to readers around the work that Seattle Public Schools is doing to address institutional racism. The intended purpose of our work in the area of race and social justice is to bring communities together through open dialogue and honest reflection around what is meant by racism and the impact is has on our society and more specifically, our students. Our intention is not to put up additional barriers or develop an “us against them” mindset, nor is it to continue to hold onto unsuccessful concepts such as a melting pot or colorblind mentality. It is our hope that we can explore the work of leading scholars in the areas of race and social justice issues to help us understand the dynamics and realities of how racism permeate throughout our society and use their knowledge to help us create meaningful change. This difficult work is vital to the success of our students and families. Thank you for sharing your concerns.

Warm regards,

The idea that racism only comes from white people has been the backbone of any minority driven stance on social and racial issues since the Civil Rights Act was signed into law. I fail to see how this is noteworthy.

It doesn't need to be redefined it’s already a perfectly germane word in this situation. When they say racism as it applies to oppression on an economic or political basis, that’s not racism is bigotry.

These Seattle schools could have been using a general minority(Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians) and a general majority (Whites) to represent their point. Its not to say that a minority of America couldn't be racist towards the majority. (But I can't say for sure)

This article has a pretty reactionary and alarmist point of view, and I think they are over reacting to their certain interpretation of these quotes.

What they're describing is neither racism nor bigotry. "Racism" is how we describe bigotry that is based on the arbitrary physical attributes that constitute "Race", racism is a subset of bigotry.

What they're trying to do is describe racism in such a way that ONLY those percieved as dominant can be described as racist, which is of course absurd on it's face and in itself a racist ideal.

You're indoctrinated to believe that the personal accumulation of wealth and the act of benefitting society are two different concepts when in fact nobody can accumulate wealth without somehow directly benefitting society.

Haha, I really don't know where we're going with this line of conversation.

Except for the fact that King county provides a little under half of the state's property tax revenue, and a fairly significant chunk of the sales tax revenue. The greater Seattle area also accounts for over a third of the state's population, earning either two or three Representatives (of our nine).

In short, we sorta need Seattle.

There are a large number of people who accumulate wealth while damaging society significantly more than they benefit it.

Creating a monopoly out of a competitive market. Robbery. War. Building an incredibly profitable yet massively pollutant factory next to someone else's property. Exploiting a lack of available information to sell a product which doesn't work as exepected. Horoscopes. Faith healing. The 700 club. Good thing we have government to fix some of those, eh?

Also, someone puts a bad definition of something on a website, then revises it. Clearly the sky is falling and the educational system is controlled by racist black people and other enemies of the least powerful group of quasi-refugees in the United States, the wealthy conformist white males. All of Seattle should be nuked for this outrage.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.
