This is probably a dumb question, since I know I'm not really asking for much in a laptop, but is there anything specific I should look for? Certain brands? Shtuff? Etc?
I have about $1400 saved up to put toward this, but I'm not really looking to spend all of it. I just don't want to go out and purchase the first laptop I see and have it fall apart 6 months later.

Or wait and see what Apple does with the iBooks and go for sexiness, if you swing that way (I do!).

Intel/AMD processors were running circles around them
But that's what you get in a stagnant niche market.

Actually, the pervailing theory is that IBM told them to fuck off. IBM didn't want to spend the R&D time/budget on developing a low power PPC970 for Apple when they were only going sell 4-5 million units total this year. Compare this to the three next generation consoles, which will likely pull between 60 and 80 million units per year and you can see why they'd rather put resources into hardware for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.
There's nothing wrong with the PPC architecture, it's just that no one besides Apple has a need for general use PPC processors. Freescale PPC processors get very good performance per watt, but they generally focus on embedded hardware. IBM's POWER5 processors are also very competitive in performance per watt in the server space. The only thing I've seen that outdoes them at the moment is Sun's new UltraSPARC T1, which is only available in low end servers right now.

Yeah, every starbucks I've walked into to try and mooch free wireless off of had a deal with Verizon I think to use their wireless access points for $30 a month. Fuck that shit. I stopped trying.
But Dell makes very good laptops anymore. I've got a 9300 with all the bells and whistles, but wish I got a 15 or 12 incher instead. 17 widescreen laptops are indeed luv for gaming, however, they are not love for carrying around a campus the size of ASU. Yup. Like $30 a month, I think. I just figure, you know, since I'm there often enough...
