Here is what I have done so far. Some of this may be useless knowledge but it shows you what's been done already if you have suggestions (which I hope you do )
Is there anything more I can do to improve my odds?

Ask them if they know anyone who might be able to help you out, be it a specific electrician, a union rep, or an employment agency. When I was hunting for jobs(good, salaried jobs, that is), I found out rather quickly that you need one of two things:
1) You need to know someone who can get your resume to the right person at the right time, or,
2) you need an employment agency who will aggressively look for jobs for you and set you up for interviews.
I spent many weeks slamming my wang in a door and getting nowhere, and precisely two weeks after I contacted a headhunting agency, I got my job. There's no reason to do the work for yourself and wind up getting nowhere.

Unfortunatly, it is more about who you know, than what you know. Not knowing people in the industry will definitely put the odds against you when it comes to getting internships.
All I can say is, keep at it. Network with people in your field if possible, get your resume out to as many companies as possible, and stay positive.
