Yes and no. Typically, if you have a codec that can play .ogg files, most likely it includes something to play mkv files. Talonus fucked around with this message on 09-30-2005 at 09:24 PM.
I know it's been years since you've been able to internet so naturally you're going to need time to gradually catch up. But I just thought you should know. Snugglits fucked around with this message on 09-30-2005 at 09:30 PM.

Go ahead. Do it. Bait me out.
Because I think that's what you and I both want.

Alas, I could use google (there's this thing called UBB that's been added to the internet since you last used it, very popular with internet forums, I hear), but I figured that since there's a lot of folks here who are familiar with alternative data file types, I'd get their impressions on what an MKV file is, how to play it, et cetera.
Now go away, Waisztoftime.

Alternatively, http://filext.com/ is a really effective website for this sort of tool, even if you know what the extension is and just want a way to open it
As far as your question...defilerpak google blah blah.

Now I have something that plays said file, except for some reason it doesn't show the subtitles.

Correction to my previous post...it's that CCCP thing that angered the computer gods. Every time I tried to open the file Lyinar opened with no problem, it tried to crash my windows explorer. Now I have something that plays said file, except for some reason it doesn't show the subtitles.
Yours is the first case I've heard of the CCCP not working. I've installed it on my laptop, desktop, parent's desktop, work desktops (4 of them so far), and gave it to my friend Alix when she was unable to view a file I had sent her.
0 problems for all of those.

Deth, if you had gotten the CCCP that I posted last time when you were asking about OGM, then you'd have everything you need to play a MKV file already
You do realize that CCCP has all the same filters/decoders as DefilerPak, and it's just bundled with some shitty media player, right? I'm not going to trust a bunch of IRC 'tards to put together a decent codec pack. It's kind of a crapshoot for codec packs anyway, but I'm even less inclined to deal with a pack that's been compiled by committee.
In short, shut the fuck up about CCCP already. We heard you the first six posts.

The way it was described to me was that it was a joint effort between several different anime fansubbing/Dvd-ripping groups (KAA and ZX being the two most prominent that I can think of off the top of my head). As for the software, it comes with the exact same media players that Defiler recommends on the webpage (MPC and ZoomPlayer).
I always try to find something that works and works well, then stick with it. DefilerPak has given me trouble in the past. There've been times when it's completely corrupted my Media Player and I had to reinstall from scratch. Last time I put Defiler on my desktop, it would cause the screen to go black every time I right-clicked or deleted a video file. CCCP hasn't given me that issue.

If you have a small green icon in your systray while you play the file, try right-clicking that, it should give you an option to show subtitles.
