Buy a sizable 3.5" IDE hard drive and an external enclosure. The enclosure shouldn't run you more than $40, and you can get plenty of hard drives for under $200.
Is that functional via USB? I need it for my laptop, which has only 1394 and USB 2.0 to work with.

Azizza had this to say about Optimus Prime:
Do not get a USB drive. While USB2 touts a higher data transfer rate on paper, the reality is that Firewire has a much higher sustained throughput. Anytime you are dealing with Video or Hard drives you want to look to firewire or even better firewire 800. I got my enclosures for around 35 bucks each from NewEgg and drives have gotten so cheap it isn't even funny.
Can perhaps recommend some? I'm not at all familiar with this type of thing. I have this tiny ass (looks like 4 pin) firewire port on the side of my computer, so I think that's doable. Kuroi Madoushi fucked around with this message on 09-07-2005 at 12:24 AM.

His does. And that is the important point at the moment.
ANd I've seen plenty of regular towers with it. My Dad's Compaq from a few years back included. Alaan fucked around with this message on 09-07-2005 at 01:07 AM.

Seems to have become a standard feature on most prebuilts.

Oddly enough, I notice no difference on my systems. I have a USB/Firewire External HD... both perform the same. Both under Windows and under Linux.
Of course when you're on a medium that will stream 400mbit+ and the HD itself inside the enclosure will *almost* stream that fast it's not much of a challenge to have the same performance.

If most motherboards have firewire, then it's entirely too case dependent. Is it so hard to put it on the back instead of having a third set of USB ports on the back panel? Apparently it is Kegwen fucked around with this message on 09-07-2005 at 06:58 AM.

Kuroi Madoushi needs to hitch a ride with a Vogon constructor fleet.
So I'm looking at this hard drive and this enclosure. What do y'all think?
