Haveing gone out and finally gotten a Copy of Wrod, I decided to get a printer, sinc ei may need to print some shit up, and I don't fell like hoofing to the Old Man's Place, or the library, or school. Snice it was a snap descion in Bestbuy, I went with a HP 1610, but before I open up this badboy, and ruin my chances of a nice efficent return, I thought to ask Any yall what would be good tto look at, or any Printers, Printer scanner combos to look for? Do bother to mention a Lexmark though, I have seen their printers sold for less than the ink.

I don't think you can go wrong with HP.

The only drawback to the HP is the drivers: there are a million, they're a little too in-your-face, and they require a re-boot every week to continue functioning.

At least for my 2710.

Otherwise, HP has awesome print quality in general for both graphics and print.

I loathe the printer/scanner/fax/coffee maker/sex toy all-in-one units. They suck. I haven't seen one that hasn't given some problems at some point.

Worst of the pack: Lexmark AIO units. HP's aren't as bad, but they still give issues.

As far as general printers go, HP printers work quite well, just avoid their "windows only" laser printers. The drivers are tempermental and if they ever get screwed up it's best to just format the box.

Best overall ratings go to Brother printers (I think it was in Consumer Reports at one point), with HP lines coming in 2nd. I've had some problems with the feeder in the HP Laserjet 6L, but it has still managed to last me seven years at this point. (I don't print much since I got my BS in CS from the univ.)

My employer uses HP printers almost exclusively. The networked ones tend to need the TCP/IP ports recreated every couple months, and a few network cards in them have died (the HP proprietary printer network adapters go for $300 each) over the years, but overall they've done pretty well.

I have an HP 1210 Printer/Scanner/Copier that's given me nothing but three years of trouble-free use. Of course, you could probably find a better printer, but eh, it was free.

Anyway, recommending HP.

The only problem with my HP is that there seems to be a poor connection between my computer and the printer.. I don't know why, but the print quality is excellent, even though it's only a 660C, and about 5 years old or something.

Espon is another good choice.

In case you're interested in a scanner... Epson Scanner > HP Scanner. I LOVE my epson scanner.. It's like.. 8 years old and I've NEVER had a problem with it. Every HP scanner I've used, there's been problems. Either the quality was crap, or the thing didn't work. My friend had an HP and it stopped working after 2 days.. They took it back to be fixed, and 2 weeks later it stopped working again. Finally they gave up on it.

I've used an HP PSC for about two years with no problems.

I've got a customer who's in the opposite field on this one. The Epson scanners she's dealt with have been absolute shit both in software and hardware. The HP Scanjet 5200c (ancient) works far better than either of the recent (less than 1 year old models) Epson scanners. And the last HP scanner she bought for work was a 7400 which ran her about 350. Now to get a comperable scanner from HP it's like a grand.

When I wanted my scanner, I did a lot of research, as did my dad's computer guru at his work. Everything pointed to Epson, perhaps this has changed over the years?

It's also obviously going to depend on what you're willing to pay. A $350 HP will obviously be better than a $150 Epson.

Sooo, I decided to keep the thing, been a bit lazy setting it up, I need to go get one of those monster Powerstrips, I have to omuch shit to plug in. Out side of school work, Grocery lists, the only other thing I really think I will be Printing is decals. My op concern was how much does the inkcarts compare, it's Sad that I can by a Lexmark Printer for less than the Ink carts in it.

HP's have been good for as long as I can remember. The current generations of Epson I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole, but some of their older ones were pretty good.

And with HP, that's mostly the name. Plus that $350 one that she bought was a Legal size scanner, not your normal Letter size. To get a similar unit today though the price has jumped to almost $1k and I don't know why. You can't seem to get a Legal size scanner anymore without paying arm + leg + first born.
