Compliments on the sig pic.
I've found multiclassing with a mage really reduces their effectiveness. I went Chaotic Good pure mage and was quite happy. Specialize if you want, but I don't like reducing my overall usefulness, even though most necromancy spells I rarely use.
You can find good tanks and good clerics fairly easily; finding a good mage or thief without a catch isn't so easy.
I wish I could offer more insight as to your exact query, but it has been quite awhile since I have played it. Have fun!

You want a character with high charisma, and high intelligence. Class doesn't really matter.
Charisma can be dealt with. Right when you get out of the starting dungeon you can get an item that boosts your charisma to 18. Bump your prime stat above all; there's stuff to deal with the rest.

The Nameless One is awesome.
The thing is, there's *4* mage/thief multiclassed characters you can pick up for your party. Something like half the available PCs are mage/thiefs. It's stupid as heck, and Sean knows it. He's just being mean.

He is, though Nordom's still cuter.
I never really noticed it like that. I mostly shelved the mages, and used Yoshimo as my thief until I could get Imoen (with +% thief items, she's okay at it), until I decided to run through the game as a monk. A lawful good monk. Which was fun in ToB, but still

I still remember the multiple delayed blast fireballs and skull traps into a room fun.
Have a character toss multiples of these into an area, then shoot at a pack of monsters with a bow.
Watch them run right through your happy fun time trap and get annihilated.
That game is freaking hard... enemies like to spawn in endless waves and healing up is alot harder in this game than any of the Baldur's Gate or NWN games since you will be hit with monster raids anytime you try to rest outside of an inn. Most battles are more about luck with the dice (and I seem to miss alot while the monsters hit alot) than preparing your characters before hand.
I remember trying to play this multiplayer. It did not work, which was sad.

It worked fine for me, try using www.hamachi.cc.

Yes, lol. I remember that.

I've always felt magic in general was kinda gimpy under D&D rules.
To start off with. As it should be.
Casters really come into their game around level 8 - 10, depending on the class. It takes a while to build up the proper spell repertoire to be effective in most situations.

Stupid epic monks.
I should probably try fighting Demogorgon sometime.

I've been wanting to try it again, except I can't decide between two parties:
Fighter
Barbarian/Paladin/Monk
Wizard
Cleric
Rogue
Bard
or
Fighter
Barbarian/Paladin/Monk
Wizard
Cleric
Rogue
Ranger
The Ranger I could deck out with massive archery feats and have him take out casters like all hell, but I'd miss the Bard songs and the free identifies. Do you remember if Bards get free identifies or if it's just anyone with a high Knowledge (Arcana) skill?
I may play a side game of IWD 2 also.

No way. IWD is stupid hack and slay. It's like Gauntlet with D&D classes.
You have cleared this dungeon. LEVEL UP! Proceed to the next dungeon.
Like a Baldur's Gate for simpletons. Bleh, boring. Tarquinn fucked around with this message on 08-02-2005 at 05:07 AM.
My last playthroughs of BG2+ToB were as a Cavalier and a CE Fighter.
I really want to get my hands on a copy of BG1, though. It seems to have disappeared from stores.

My main complaint is the "spells per day" crap. A melee character can fight dawn til dusk, but casting characters have a wad that's blown fairly quickly and really aren't any more effective on the whole.
Reagent costs are pretty crappy as well. A fighter pays for a sword once and, barring any artificially inserted events that damage it, keeps it for as long as he likes. A caster has to pay for his raise dead spell once... then keep paying 50g for every cast of it?

Well...that sword tends not to be quite so spectacular as things like transmuting foes to dust, or eternal imprisonment, or soul-ripping-out, or instant multiple unraisable kills, etc.
