While he was technically sniping, I don't think it's accurate to call the shooter a sniper, because my bet is he has no particular marksmanship skills and no special-purpose weapon.

But that's only a 7.62mm round--not gonna go through body armour at any range at all. There's a reason our specialist snipers use .50cal weapons, and it's not only range.

The blog talked about the shot being "inside the 10-ring," which is okay if you're a grunt, but not what you should be looking for as a sniper. A sniper's job is to take the target out, not blindly shoot a particular spot regardless of armor.

Umm What kind of armor are they fitting our guys with now? I was under the impression that 7.62/.308 would go through damn near any armor. Or was this 7.62x39? All the Dragonovs I have owned were in 7.62x51

I have a wall clock made out of a target sample of ceramic/kevlar composite armor that sucessfully stopped three 7.62x51 AP rounds. It is a bit thicker that that used for body armor though.

You have to take into consideration that the round hit the vest obliquely, like it said in the blog, which may account for the fact that it didn't penetrate.

The New Ceramic plates are fucking beasts, seen test footage of them being shot, and they don't stop the bullet, they shatter it. It's a diffrent ball game than Kevlar/spectra vests.

I talked with a local marine who's handling the liason work between the private companies who make body armor for the U.S. Marines and right now they're trying to get back around 10,000 vests because the ceramic plates on the side are not even withstanding 9mm bullets.

I was under the impression that the actual round is smaller, but the cartridge firing it is oversized (Hence the standard "rifle bullet" image we all come up with), providing more charge for a smaller mass.. thus, higher muzzle velocity and overall power.

I could be 1009101% wrong, though.

My guess is a combination of a need for higher muzzle velocities to penetrate modern body armor, and advances in bullet technology that allow for better jackets to withstand that penetration with a lower bullet weight. Not sure if they're being used much in small calibers, but sabot technology is also much better than it used to be, and allows for all sorts of armor penetration possibilities--but I think that's reserved for bigger guns and artillery right now.

Yeah, it's a .223. It'll leave a mark, though. It's not anywhere near a standard .22 long rifle; it's got lots o' powder behind it, and both shell and bullet are longer.

I know with the M-16 when it was first introduced, one of the biggest advandeces in useing the smaller round was how much Ammo a soldier could carry. going from the m-14 (I think) to an m-16, a Soldier could carry two to three times as much ammo.

There is a pistol that shoot these really tiny rounds, but has this huge clip capasity for a pistol.

Well, Vietnam era there were people dragging one of those around on foot. But they would set up a bi-pod to fire from. None of that Rambo, running around with it bullshit.

I'm unsure what the SAW(Squad Automatic Weapon) uses caliber wise. The replacement for the old M-60 if I remember right.

The M240G, which the marines use, is 7.62mm and can fire a sustained 100 rounds per min.

The M249, which I gather the army uses, is 5.56mm and can fire a sustained 85 rounds per min.

So apparently even machine guns use small caliburs.
