Imagine for a moment, the public outcry that would occur if we started telling churches what they are and are not permited to teach in their bible studies, based off what is the current scientific teachings.

There would be revolt. There would be riots. It would never stand.

Then why are we ok with churches telling schools what they are and are not permited to teach in their science class, based off what is the current religious teachings? It's the same thing, just in reverse.

Think about it.

Gallup polling shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans do not believe that evolution is a valid theory. Perhaps even more telling is that about half of all Americans believe something very much like the biblical creation myth really occured.

Here's the poll in question.

Given that, it's easy to see why the door only swings one way.

Well in theory, in the United States or any democracy for that matter, if the majority said to teach full evolution and all the non-religious science teachings in school. Then that is what would be done. But when 80% of Americans believe in some form of a creator, it's kind of hard to get a 51% vote in favor of their cause.

But you are absolutly right, if a government tries to oppose a religion then the people are destined to revolt in some way. But if they endorse the religion then the non-religious people will just whine and complain and move on with their lives.

Or you can get inter-faith strife if the government pushes views or a belief set that doesn't mesh with everyone else's, and wind up with the kind of power struggle there used to be between the catholic church and the church of england / anglican church.

It sounds like this poll forgot to take into consideration the fact that most people don't even know what either creationism or evolution are.

Remember the one poster that broke in here claiming evolution was the theory that one species could spontaniously transform into another?

Well, not in a codified sense, no. Or, at minimum, they think they know what creationism and evolution are. In a broad sense, though, there are more people who know Genesis from attending church than there are people who can give a two-to-three sentence definition of evolution theory. I think this is reflected in the poll, since it doesn't ask about creationism specifically. It's more of a gut reaction.

And are you talking about Cetona? Or that Archon guy? Both made some pretty hilarious claims.

Thing is that a lot of people believe that you HAVE to believe in creationism and you HAVE to disbelieve in evolution if you believe in God.

These people would not see the poll in terms of a question of genesis theories, but rather a question of belief in a God.

Yeah, see, 49% of the people polled responded with an answer that left room for evolution as science understands it, whereas 45% actively disbelieved in evolution, and the rest abstained.

This kinda supports my assertion.

Evolution says we came from monkeys, right? Pfft, indeed...

I say my invisible man in the sky theory is much more scientifically sound, and I'm right because most people agree with me. That's how democracy works and if you don't like it go to Russia with all the other godless Communists.

That might possibly be true for the 45% of the population, sure. I don't think it's messing with the numbers in any significant way, though. I mean, creationism and ID(Creationism Lite! Less filling, just as moronic!) is based on ignorance of evolution. I doubt that any large chunk of that 45% have examined evolution with any seriousness. Or, they learned just enough to pass high school biology, but put no thought into it. I'm not convinced that it's about God so much as it is cultural inertia and sheer ignorance.

And what about that 37% who think that humans developed, but with God's guidance? That covers both ID adherents and theistic evolutionists. They believe in God(check me out on this week's cover of DUH! magazine}but also subscribe to, at minimum, some sort of idea of evolution or another. It may be something as retarded as spontaneous speciation or Intelligent Design, but it's something other than literal biblical creationism.

Even the 12% most likely contains theists of some sort, as I seem to recall that less than 12% of the country is nontheist(atheist, agnostic, etc.). I'll see if I can verify that.

Also, consider this other quesion in the poll down at the bottom. 48% of respondants think creationism is the better theory, with another 9% leaning towards it as the better theory. I think that goes beyond a simple question of God belief.

NO NO NO! This is the one argument that creationists make that sends me right up the frikkin' wall. They usually follow up quickly with "If man descended from apes, then why are there still apes?" I call this bit of logical footwork "The Stupid Shuffle". Darwin never said that man descended apes. What he did say was that man and ape evolved from a COMMON ANCESTOR. I don't know if creationists just conviniently forget that part or actively ignore it, so as to bully the intellectually weak.
