I thought tunneling dozens of connections through a proxy like that was somehow taboo.

Not necessarily. It depends on how the proxy is setup and how it is intended to be used. Some proxies are setup for the express purpose of having all traffic funneled through them on a network. Not the best reason to have a proxy server, but some people / businesses do it.
