Was this the activist judiciary DeLay was talking about?

Now, I'm sure getting this overturned will be quite easy. It's nonetheless quite kooky.

An Indianapolis father is appealing a Marion County judge's unusual order that prohibits him and his ex-wife from exposing their child to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals."

You've gotta be kidding me. Judges like this need to be kicked out, immediately.

Disbar that jerk. Like yesterday!

The Government has no place in telling a parent what religion is acceptable to instruct their children! Especially if both parents agree on it!

I almost wonder if the judge is in an elected position, and if he made the ruling, knowing that it would be overruled, just to score a few points with some people on the extreme side of Christian groups.

This isn't even worth getting upset over.

Unless, for some bizarre reason, it holds up on appeal.

The words Contempt of court would have applied to me in spades..

I am a firm believer that this country was founded on " christian Values" However it was also founded with the idea that you are free to worship however you wish as long as you are not harming others. Now this idiot has taken the very thing that the Founding fathers were trying to avoid and turned it into reality.

Prayer (of any sort) before a governmental even = fine
Ten Commandments or whatever in a courthouse = fine.
Telling a person what religion they or their child is allowed to practice = idiotic decision that should have the guy removed from any position of authority.

Thing is, shit like that shouldn't have to go to appeal in the first place. It's an extra amount of costs to over turn something that's blatantly a miscarriage.

Why did that even go to courts to begin with?

It was a part of the parents' divorce case, the strange thing is that neither of the parents requested that clause, yet the judge decided to insert it.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. I do not intend to derail this thread in any way but I have a relevant question, what is the standard method of becoming a judge, appointment or election?

I ask this cause of an earlier comment about trying to score points with a political group. It does seem that electing judges would destroy any chance of a judge being an impartial authority.

Some places in the US do elect them for state courts, federal judges are all appointed afaik.

He calls himself a conservative though. (At least I assume he does- He has written in a book called "The Conservative Environmentalist") Although this decision sounds despicable at first, I'd like to hear his reason for upholding the commisioners decision to prevent the child from being raised as a Wiccan before trying to crucify him. (It's not like this judge randomly said "your child can't be raised Wiccan"- the couple lost an appeal to that decision)

Actually, the more I think about it, I can see the reason for doing this.

It's a well-known but rather undocumented fact that the Wiccan faith did encourage barbaric and tortuous practices before a majority of its fanatical followers were forcibly removed from this mortal coil. The judge was acting purely in the child's best interest to protect it from the obvious brainwashing he was to receive from fanatical parents.

I can see no reason to force this child into the hands of non-religious fanatics who will sorely skew his view on life and the world in general.

Is this supposed to be a troll or are you overlooking the various historical transgressions of pretty much any religion in history that were common before their fanatical followers died out?

I don't see how you of all people can be opposed to this; I thought socialists were all for government-mandated prayer and those things.

Face it; Away from a Wiccan influence the child will simply grow up to be much more tolerant and compassionate than he would in such a close-minded family.

I don't agree with the decision, but I can see why it was made.

The judge is taking the position that if your kid is in a Catholic school, you shouldn't be confusing him with wiccan beliefs as well, and if you want to teach him wicca, get him into a regular public school. But it wasn't worded that way at all in the clause.

This can be said of any religion, if you think about it. Either way, it is unconstitutional for a United States Judge, who is affiliated with the government, to direct the religious doctrine of any individual, be it an adult or that adult's child.

Children do have the ability to choose a religion for themselves, but parents have the right to teach their chosen religion to their children.

For example, if this were a Baptist child going to a Catholic school(fat chances, I know), and this same ruling was mandated, most people would not be NEARLY as accepting.

My father always wanted me to learn what ever I could about religion so I would be able to make my own decisions. Sending a kid to a Catholic school, and raising them in a different belief does no harm. It helps broaden their mind.
