Gunslinger Moogle had this to say about dark elf butts:
The Lottery was OK but I don't think it's one of those must-read things. It surely did not change my life the first time I read it a few years ago.
Oh it doesn't change my life, it's just a useful tool in discussing why using tradition as a sole reason to do something is a crock of shit. Came up with a discussion between me and Gee about overpopulation and the factors behind it...
Then I laughed.
But someone that isn't a complete douche brought this up in a discussion about books we were forced to read in school that didn't suck. I never had to, or went out and did, read The Lottery, but I had The Giver.
The Giver rocked.
It's not something people hear about.

Uh, basic logic is a useful tool in discussing why "because it's always been that way" is a stupid premise from which to argue.

The Giver rocked.
Is that what I'm thinking of? Or is that "The Giving Tree?"
There's a reeeally sad episode of Fruits Basket that has the little monkey kid tell a Japanese story about a foolish man who gave away everything he owned, body parts included, and got called a loser in the end.
And: Yes, logic is a viable tool. But I am a kinetic learner, and as such, it is easier for me to demonstrate a point through a situation, rather than just explaining it. Kait fucked around with this message on 04-27-2005 at 11:18 PM.

No, the giver was about some creepy old man who makes some little boy take off his shirt and lay down.

It was totally me.

Whoa, when did we have that conversation? I just remember something along the lines of:
Kait: God, why do mormons all have 11 kids?
Me: tradition and religion
Kait: But that's stupid.
Me: yep. but those are pretty powerful things for people
and that was about it.
And yes, The Giver rocked. I think i'm gonna try and track it down to read again sometime. Haven't read it since 6th grade. Dr. Gee fucked around with this message on 04-28-2005 at 11:39 AM.
