Topic: Wireless routers?

I've tried to do my homework, but I haven't really found any glowing reviews for any brand yet. So I turn to EC, because I don't know where else to go.

Basically, we're getting a new wireless router soon to replace the Linksys wired router that we have. Because it's been nothing but trouble. I don't want to go to a brand that'll be more trouble, and I don't think my dad does either. So we're looking around at options.

Right now my dad is looking at a Netgear wireless router. I don't really know much either way, so are they any good? Do they suck? Who would you recommend over them?

thx.

I have found that Netgear wireless routers are pretty meh. I bought a Linksys G-spec wireless router and it has performed admirably thus far.

I currently have a Netgear 802.11b router and it just shit the bed on me the other day. Only had it for a little over a year. I've heard the better Netgear routers (802.11g) are much much better compared to the one I got.

I have no faith in Netgear products. Our first router was Netgear, and it burned out after about a year and a half. My friend bought a Netgear wireless router, and the wireless stopped working after 2 months. Linksys sells for comparable prices and has been much more reliable in my experience. If you've got a bit of money to burn, 3COM has always been a good brand.

Netgear is pretty much awesome. I've been using a Netgear router at home and it is much better than the old Linksys one.

Linksys is shitty.

My former roommate uses a Netgear.

I use a Linksys.

Both have given us weird problems from time to time, so from my perspective your luck will be about as good either way.

Netgear and Linksys are the best brands by far.

Don't know how old your current Linksys is but some of the older (2 years+ ago) were notoriously difficult to configure. All the newer stuff seems to do pretty well with XP. You just have to realize there is alot to a router that you need to learn in order to manage it proficiently... You get network and internet related errors when the router isnt ready to do what you are asking it to do alot of the time... Most often this is due to *closed ports*

Can't comment on Netgear because I havent dealt with their tech-support personally, but Linksys has been able to get me around all the weird problems ive encountered so far.

I prefer Linksys for access points and Netgear for routers/access point combinations.

edit: You will regret it if you buy one of the Netgear router / APs that cost less than $50. Trust me.
