omg omg omg you play FFXI? jeez
Good to see someone's having fun with that game though.
Also a nice change of pace from WoW threads!
I would have loved to have kept playing if it wasn't so boring.

As long as I can have Taru.
Seemed like it would have been fun, but I'm probably not hardc0r3 enough for FFXI. Everyone I've talked to who "made it" in FFXI gives me the impression that it was a grinder's game, and I suppose I'm not one of those people

And grinding is the only thing you can do if you choose it that way. Tons of stuff to do. New fishing changes coming... well.. this afternoon as a matter of fact, make fishing more of a minigame instead of a borefest. As well as penaltyless, free battlefields coming today too. Missions, quests, battlefields, farming, fishing, crafts, escorting NPCs through dungeons for EXP.. tons of things to do if you look for them.
Hell. I work 5 days a week, during the evening and I'm 2nd best North American Monk on my server. Soon to be the absolute best once I finish up my Black Belt quest. Skaw fucked around with this message on 02-23-2005 at 03:32 AM.

Probably because there are two people playing.

Uh.. no? This isn't Anarchy Online or City of Heroes.

To be fair, you also need to consider that you're a human monk, one of the most wanted race/class dps combos in the higher end leveling scheme due to the high quantity of skeletons that get raped by grapple-type weapons. Yes, there are tons of things to do, but unless you fit the form of "the best," it is very difficult.
If you had been, say, a taru DRG or some sort of Galka caster, I would applaud your efforts and be amazed at how well the game has accepted you. But given what you are, I'm not really surprised that you've been able to do so well considering your limited schedule.
(For a bit of background info, so I don't sound like I'm coming out of the blue here, I played FFXI for a year and a half, had a taru character, and got RNG and DRG to 60, RDM to 62 and MNK to 63 before I quit.)
(And please don't take my comment as hostile at all, I'm just clarifying based on knowledge )

And yes, there are missions, there are quests, but unlike the next generation of MMOGs (WoW and EQ2), they barely made up for any experience. And thus, you're forced to grind your way to the top. Let's not forget about leveling subjobs too. As a monk alone, you had to keep not only thief and warrior up, but ninja and samurai (until they fixed some of the bugs with it, dunno if it's still as "required" now).
That's just experience. Don't get me STARTED on gil. On Ragnarok, gil selling/buying was and still is popular. Ochiudos Kote, the infamous monk gloves, used to be around 300k. The last time I checked the price, it was 700k. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit over a million. If you don't call hitting the mines/goobbue gardeners/tigers a grind, then what do you call it? A waltz through the park? BCs could only take you so far before you ran out of coins. Then you'd, yep, have to grind to get more.
Oh oh oh, NM fights were a blast. Competing against Japanese farmers with turbo controllers rocked! That can't be fun.

With that out of my system, it is nice to see someone who can withstand all of that and get into the other parts of the game. FFXI has the best storyline for an MMOG, period. Better than WoW's, because you feel INVOLVED. Cutscenes are ingenious. And I daresay FFXI still has some of the best graphics, it's just a shame you can't interact with the actual scenery more.
The job system is a fantastic idea, it was very nice to be able to go "oh, you guys need a blm instead of a whm? OK, lemme switch jobs and fly over to Kazham quick." No need to redo all the missions and quests to build up fame for another alt, you just switched. To say I miss it in WoW is an understatement.
Oh yeah, Ballista rocked too.

Yeah! Most wanted DPS class after 70 levels!
Too bad MNK party invites are abysmal between 45 and 60, where everyones hopped on Distortion being the only viable skillchain.
And Addy, I only have Warrior and White Mage leveled up for support, and even then, whtie mage is only leveled for Chi Cannon times. Never was required to use anything else. No one in their right mine would ask a MNK to sub THF for Sneak/Trick weaponskills, since every monk weaponskill is multihit, you lose the effectiveness, when you can easily find a Warrior, Samurai or Dark Knight using it, with much better hate transfer results. If there had been a NA only server at the start, I'd probably be playing still.

60 levels of fighting crabs, pugils, and worms
Hands down my biggest gripe about the game. The graphics were gorgeous, but seeing the same models over and over drove me crazy. A simple reskin would suffice; fighting the same crabs at level 40 as you did at level 5 is just too much.
Even EQ vanilla's simple recoloring helped break the tedium of its model selection. And, hell, it had a better selection of models anyway. Pretty sad, considering FFXI is a few generations down the line. Suddar fucked around with this message on 02-24-2005 at 12:10 AM.

Did the armor?
Because I really hated having about 4 different suits of armor in 30 levels, two or three of which looked the same.
You could upgrade with older armor for a few extra DEF, but with all the STA and AGI the +1 version had... you can live without 4 or 5 extra DEF overall. Kael fucked around with this message on 02-24-2005 at 12:24 AM.

Yeah, that was my biggest gripe with FFXI - the EXTREMELY limited equipment selection.
I was bummed when I thought equipment choices were opening up at level 20-something, when I realized that my options were still limited to one set or another, except now they had a few different names...
