It started yesterday, I had a bloated feeling in my chest... took some medicine for it, but I guess I was too late becauses it stepped up to unimaginable pain in my stomach and chest area. I didn't know what to do at the time, all I knew is I was in tears and had difficulty breathing (more than likely because I wasn't calm at *all*), so I brought myself to the hospital to get it checked out. Well, pain went away ~10 minutes I got there, and there was a freaking long wait at the ER with people who needed more assistance than me, so after two hours of waiting I discharged myself, thinking stress was what caused it.

Bad mistake.

Here I am, in the morning, shaking in my bed as I type this on a laptop. The pain has returned, and the only reason why I'm not on the brink of tears is because I've been controlling my breathing. I don't know how to describe it, it's the stomach, behind my chest (lungs?), and my chest itself is rather sore from all of this. Someone I know says I may be coming down hard with the flu, does this make sense?

I don't tolerate pain well, so this is just a pure nightmare for me. I wonder if this is God's way of saying "Melissa, get the fuck to a hospital now." And just put up with the 2-5 hour ER wait, or something.

I'm just mainly venting here, so don't mind me. Nothing else to do right now except complain about the pain.

God I hope the medicine kicks in soon. ;_; This is the type of pain where you wish someone could just knock you out *right now*, although I bet the pain would wake me up from that, even.

Any short term tips for dealing with this sort of pain before I make time to get to the hospital? Probably like, early afternoon or so. ;_;

Sorry for this sort of post, I know these aren't fun to read.

EDIT: Pains have been going on for about an hour now, sometimes they let up for a short bit. Also, for the short time I did get checked out (mainly to see if they needed to help me omgnow or could throw me in the waiting room of doom), my temperature was just a little above 95. My normal is, I think, between 97.7-98.3

Control your breathing and don't panic.

Yeah, this does sound like the sort of thing you should go to the hospital for.

Yeah, yesterday I ended up panicking and it made the whole ordeal worse, haha.

The pain's let up for now, I still feel a little pressure in my chest but I can at least sleep now. Definitely heading to the hospital later.

I just went to a flu website for "shits and giggles" and sounds like I *might* have it, but I don't want to start labeling what I have yet. Anyway, I don't think I have a fever. Save the labeling for the doctor. The last thing I need is to see that "chest pains are common for urdeadilicus" and start freaking out.

Actually it does hurt a bit more when I do (especially lying on the stomach, most comfortable is on side). I've noticed the most "comfortable" position for me is sitting hunched over, just enough to ease some pain but not enough to distort any breathing. Standing hunched over a counter produces similar results.

I'm gonna see if any of the non-ER clinics are open later today, as I don't want to deal with ER unless if it's absolutely necessary.

I have esophageal reflux (valve at the top of my stomach doesn't close all the way; it's mostly in remission these days...it is possible to grow out of it) and I have to say I've never had a problem with pressure. Usually it was agonizing mother-of-all-pains burning, sloshing agony, like I swallowed napalm.

Honestly it sounds like a heart attack, kinda. Given that you aren't dead, though, maybe plurassy? (I know I misspelled that)

If you call 911, you bypass the ER wait, right? If so, I don't think doing so would be unreasonable in this case.

Could be an asthma attack. I recall chest pains and trouble breathing from the few I've gotten, and I threw up once in highschool after running myself to exhaustion. In college, I had one asthma attack that lasted about two hours, after I ran in cold weather. My asthma is minor, so I've always been able to deal with it.

Heart attack is also a possibility, though I haven't had one myself, just read about how to recognize them in Reader's Digest recently (Jan or Feb '05 issue). Dunno if you have any risk factors of that, though.

[EDIT] The temperature drop sounds like a flu strain that I caught in January. That caused vision problems, nausea, trouble breathing, and exhaustion. It lasted about a day.

I agree with getting to a doc asap. I think it could possibly be a panic attack, if you've been stressed out over stuff alot recently. Something similar happened to my mother before she lost most of her grip on sanity.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

You. Doctor. Now.

I had something like that happen to me once before. The ER determined it was a panic attack. It felt like a heart attack to me. It came out of nowhere. I had never before experienced that, and at the time I wasn't really under any undue stress. I had experienced pleurisy before, which feels like a sharp pain in my chest, but nothing like the other thing.

I hope you feel better, whatever it is!

Hehe I'm far too young to have a heart attack, plus I've dealt with this pain twice so far.

It's silly to go to the ER when I'm not even experiencing the pain ATM, so I have an appointment Monday. It'll give me time to figure out if it's the flu, acid reflux, or stress. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a combination of a cold and stress, really (losing energy ).

Nooo it's not silly. Recently I herniated a disc in my back and it hurt really bad when I woke up, but was semi-bearable at times after I had been moving around for a while. I thought my back was just sore, turns out it was a shitload more serious.
