So I'm selling my Trailblazer currently.

I'm in search of a car. A sports car. My dream is a Trans Am, but unfournalty insurance will rape me if I purchase a 98+. I've been looking around. Can't find much.

I've never liked Ford nor the Mustang. But I went and test drove a local one. All I can say is, WoW. What I have been missing being so Chevy-close-minded.

Heres some pics of the one I drove:

Specs of the car:

Year 2001
Body Style Convertible
Mileage 28,800
Exterior Color White
Interior Color Black
Engine 8 Cylinder Gasoline
Transmission Manual
Drive Type 2 wheel drive
Fuel Type Gasoline
Doors Two Door
VIN 1FAFP45X71F144393

Price $14,950

Is it worth the price to you guys? The cars in immuclate condition not even a tear/scratch of the leather.

Also any other suggestions of cars?

That's a solid car for the price.

But are you looking for sports car for looks, or for power/speed?

For looks, the Mustang GT is a nice car. But if you want power/speed out of it, it's definatly going to fall short compared to other sports cars.

The motor will definitely last you for a long time unless it has been thoroughly abused. The 4.6 is definitely capable of going 200k+ miles if you have any intention of keeping it for a long time.

Err, insurance will rape you for a 1998+, yet this is a 2001, V8 convertible? Might want to check what insurance for this would be. You're paying about Blue Book value for it, so price doesn't seem to be an issue. It is a fun car to drive though.

2001 Trans Am Coupe
Current: $1,308.04
After change: $1,698.04
$390.00 increase

2001 Mustang GT Vert:
Current: $1,308.04
After Change: $1,529.04
$221.00 increase

Makes...no..sense..

I'm actually going to call them right now about this just to see if its correct.

I'm all about power/speed for the money. But insurance is all about charing me money for power/speed!

Mustang's the lowest priced 'sports' car.

Could always get a 98+ Camaro, too. Probably find one for less than a T/A, but it'll still have an LS1. Don't know how much of a difference it'll make on insurance, though.

Sounds right. TA has much more HP than the Mustang. And more jerk early 20's drivers in them. When you drive a Camaro/Firebird you pay for the other idiots.

Yep just confirmed those quotes.

Sucks.

I'd rock a Trans Am over anything.

Camaro's are nice. But I wouldn't purchase one. Just not my style.

my co-worker has it and so does one of my friends.

things to remember

- if you mod out your car, you can't get better bang for your buck horsepower than one of those. for enthusaists like you, there are some of the best cars you can get.
- you'll have a lot of fun with it

get a second car if you buy it becuase,
- if it rains a little, you are fucked
- if it snows, you are really fucked
- expect it to break down quite a bit. because it will.
- you can't carry shit
- unless your friends are my size, the back seats are kinda usless.

edit: for most people i'd say it isn't worth it and keep looking, but i really think you'd like this car. price sounds good, but that's with no research at all. if you do get it, remember to get a cheap used blazer or legacy or something as a second car. just no jeep boxes because that defeats the purpose of having a car for the snow

edit2: may wan to look into a WRX and throwing in a kit into it. a friend of a friend has one of those, and really likes it. aparently the vishnu kit is dissapointing, though

ps: Get a something awful account and check out the Automotive Insanity forums. I garentee you'll like it there. with the exception of beta and a few others, most of us don't know that much about cars.

Wow.

Someone on another forum works at a ford dealership and did some research on the VIN.

Lets just say I will not be purchasing this Mustang!

They also have me convinced its worth it to hold out for a decent 98-02 LS1 6speed T/a or Formula. I think its more of the way to go.

I'm gonna try to stop rushing looking at cars and wait till something perfect comes along. No use until I've sold the Trailblazer anyways.

good deal. i meant what I said about buying a second car if you get a stang, though. i garentee you will need one. both of my friends with stangs need a ride from someone else whenever the weather gets bad.

also, since you said you are looking for style, ignore my wrx comment.

WRX's are a style of their own. I thought insurance would kill me on them, but hey really its not that bad. $201.00 increase every 6 months.

Problem is finding one in decent condition for a decent price.

plus they have the obvious advantage of being able to handle conditions the stang can't, at the cost of not turning as many heads.

I'm not sure where they rank on reliablity though

Your friends need to learn how to drive. We've had pretty much every generation of Mustang and a nasty sloped driveway and/or living fairly out from the main of town and never had any real troubles. Do they handle excellently in the snow or whatever? No. But they will get you along fine if you don't asshole around.

Hybrids are great, until gas prices drop, then you're just left with a shitty car.

(gas prices are currently dropping, btw)

My friends dad had a 1999 WRX STi up into the point where he sold it for a new bike. He had it for 4 years and never, once had a problem with it. On top of that, it was fucking fast and had AWD. Almost 300 horse power (the new one has 300). The other specs If you want them.
The only problem with the STi is it's kinda hard to find. Subaru makes solid cars.

or.. you are just still spending less on gas than everyone else.

sill, there is one hybrid that I have my on....

255 horsepower may not be sporty, but it's more than enough for every day travel, and 37/29 mpg is great. not to mention the thing has features similar to most luxry cars and doesn't look like ass like other hybrids do. i want this car.

edit: more info on a so-called "shitty car" here

edit2: What's the insurance like on the STi? Are the roomers about it being much more than the WRX true?

STi = hopped up WRX, at least as far as I understand it. The one with a turbo instead of just the 2.5.

I'd tell you to take a look at 95-99 M3s, but I'm fairly sure they really aren't what you're looking for. Insurance isn't cheap, and you'd probably have to buy a set of metric tools to get by on them. Not to mention they tend to be a PITA to work on and the bills can add up later in their lives. Awesome cars when they work well though.

The WRX is already turbo. Both have a boxer 2.5, the STi just puts out more power.

From what I've heard on the STi is that they took the WRX and "added" onto it with one thing in mind... speed/power. My friend test drove one a few weeks back. Basiclly they strip anything out of it to reduce weight including the radio and speakers. He came to the conclusion that this isn't a good day to day car. Only a good racing car.

A guy over on MacAddict did a comparison on a couple of Hybrid cars. You would have to drive them around 350,000 miles just to break even on them. The increased cost over an equivalent normal engined car is just to much right now.
