It's just fun as shit, although you really have to learn ammo management early on or be forced to use crappy scavanged weapons.

I think you're thinking of Star Wars Battlefront. IIRC, it used a modified Battlefield engine.
Republic Commando is using the Unreal engine. The action should be a lot faster paced than Battlefield...like UT or something.

Other than that, I agree with Tok. The guns look cool but they just don't go boom or sound very intimidating enough.
