I agree with this post.
sorry, but this is the one problem I have with the new series. That change alone changed the whole story to something else...
It's alright but it's nothing compared to the greatness of the original. Not enough action, too much blah blah blahing. Did I mention that I hate intentionally shakey camera work?

i felt the same way... at first. After the initial shock, I realised she potrays a good starbuck. You have your Janeways (Voyager) that throw the whole woman thing in your face and make it quite annoying, then you have your Ivonavas (B5) who simply fit the part. I think that the new starbuck fits the part.
After hearing all the bad reviews about the show, I had pretty low expectactions... but after watching it for myself, I like it.

Cylons were a race of replicating war machines left over from an ancient lizard-like race extinct centuries ago

No, the Cylons were originally a warlike reptilian race who used a robotic/cybernetic army and space navy to conquer other species. That army rebelled and killed all the Cylons, then called themselves Cylons and carried on their mission of enslavement and genocide against all living things.
The Imperious Leader is the only cylon who is allowed to wear a reptilian face, and his voicewaves are that of an evil undying being who originally corrupted them and turned them against their masters.
I know too much about crap like this.
I fell asleep during the third episode, hopefully I can catch it in re-run.
I think it's going to take time to get to like Starbuck.

I think this is a very good series. I never touched the orginal so I'm going into this knowing nothing. I love how they use bullets and nukes instead of fire xxx laser banks all over, sheilds up blah blah blah.
Agreed. This gives it a much more "real" aspect. They also use real physics in the space battle and maneuvering. The ships move more like real space ships would instead of Airplanes in space.
Although I must say I am impressed by Galactica's ability to take a nuke amidship and come off with some buckled hull plates and minor decompression.
It is also quite disturbing to see them open up with a full broadside, not much can get through that.
The girl Boomer wasn't too bad, though, and I didn't mind it at all. Though the relationship with the Chief fellow seems a little off. We'll see how that goes.
Starbuck the Girl seems to have chilled out a bit through the three episodes and I've grown to like her a bit more. It's still going to take a bit, but at least I'm not letting it get in the way of enjoying the show. I just don't want to see her sleep with Apollo or it'll hurt my brain.
Almos' rendition of Cmdr Adama is inspiring and I'm enjoying it.
Overall, I'm enjoying the show quite a bit. It gets better with each episode. The last one with the Prison riot is my current favorite, just because of the way it tells a good story and has a unique ending compared to other shows.
As for the shaky camera work, I guess I don't really see it. I mean, I see the camera jumping here and there during the space/ship sequences, but I think it rather kinda suits it pretty well and I like it.
I don't see that character as such a raving PMS machine. I think the character could be played well as a woman, but just not THAT woman.

it doesn't look like that machinegun fire coming from the MKIIs were really bullets. they would have ran out of ammo wicked fast with the way they were continually firing.

dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but in the new series they say that cylons were built by humans and they rebelled against their human masters. atleast i'm pretty sure that's what i heard.

yeah... the plot is pretty diffrent. the major IDEAS or the same, but how they are present are diffrent... cylons bad.. boltar's a dick working with the cylons... priosn colony as a plotpoint.... searching for earth... fleeing from overwhelming odds... laws of kobol... "by your command"
what I really want to know is if they will ever run across the other surviving battlestar. i forget what it's called.
and no robotic dog.. what's with that?!
oh, in the original series there were a lot of humans that weren't attacked yet, because humans weren't confined to one solar system diadem fucked around with this message on 01-24-2005 at 03:28 PM.

Another surviving Battlestar? As far as I remember there was not one mentioned. In fact they said that they are the last remaining ships.
As for the Camera Work: I like it. The space battles have a camera at a set point in space that follows the ships. It makes you feel like you are sitting there watching the action from another ship in space.
Also, the boy Boxy (spelling?) was Apollo's son in the original series. Moffit (sp?) the robotic thing (dog?) was annoying in my opinion.
The other humans they ran across were in some cases, forgotten people in what was once a larger empire of the 12 tribes of Kobol, before that start of the Cylon wars. One was a prison colony that made ambrosia (alcohol, probably wine) that kept it's ways for many generations and the offspring were made to pay for the ancestors sins.
The next episode will develop Starbuck even more. She's dealing with alot of guilt but I like the balls she does have. She claims "not to have a big enough dipstick" to be CAG. (Commander Air Group)
In the half hour special before the series began the producer said he wanted the filming of the show to be like you were on board observing what was going on in the ship. Spying on the Chief and Boomer for example. And in the case of the space battles to make it look like there was a guy in a spacesuit out in the middle of it all filming it. IMO, I like the camera work that's done and I love the attention to physics too.

Yeah, that was the name of it. Thanks. They didn't know it survived in the original series either. Radio silence, I guess, I don't remember. Basicly while the galatica was trying to evac the Pegasus was on a trail of bloody revenge, al la kill bill style. That's why they didn't bump into each other for a while.
As for the "i'll be there in twenty centons" it becomes so second nature you don't even notice it, so I didn't even realise they cut that. I think it adds to the feel of the show. If you notice "Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Echo Foxtrot Golf Hotel India Juliet Kilo Lima Mike November Oscar Papa Quebec Romeo Sierra Tango Uniform Victor Whiskey Xray Yankee Zulu" is no longer the standard, so at least that's something sci fi-ish. diadem fucked around with this message on 01-24-2005 at 08:04 PM.

And to take this even further, yes they do. I was out killing pirates last night and wandered into a pack of Hutt light fighters. Didn't think to take a screenshot, sorry.
They find Kobol, the original home of the 13 tribes.
Boomer becomes activated as a Cylon Agent after meeting herself on a Cylon Base Star, which she has to destroy as part of her mission (and does).
Boomer shoots the Commander twice, series ends on him bleeding all over the command desk. Maybe dead?
Another Boomer clone on Caprica is pregnant with Helio's child, and it's revealed that that's the Cylon's master plan. They want to create a hybrid race with the strength of the Cylons and the soul and spirit of the Humans.

its been shown on sky one in britian for awhile now, you can download them off of torrent sites, thats what i've been doing for months, i couldn't wait
Sometimes it got REAL preachy. I didn't realize how preachy until I watched the series straight through. It's even more a Bible story if you look into the original concepts. Starbuck was going to be a pseudo-Christ figure (the guy who always comes through to save people, the chick he had a thing for was originally a prostitute, not a nurse, etc). They shaved a lot of the obviously religious stuff off, but there's still a lot of pattern there. The novels largely ditched it, which is important because of what I'm about to say next:
It would have killed a new series. It would have. There's enough left to fulfill a pattern, to make use feel related to the humans in the new series, but there isn't enough to seem preachy or overly-religious. Any time you see overtly religious overtones in a sci-fi show it ends up killing it. It's pretty much what killed Millennium (Chris Carter's second show with Lance Henriksen...it started slipping in the Christian Theology stuff and things pretty much went to shit).
Sooooo they reworked a lot of stuff. It's more interesting if the Cylons are human's own creation. It's nice because it gives them a reason for what they do. An insight into the reasoning, the mentality, the goals. Frankly, it got kind of old in the original series. "Cylons appear, chase good guys, Baltar cackles like a madman...NEXT EPISODE: repeat". There was VERY little added depth.
A few years ago I went to Imaginecon and Richard Hatch (the original Apollo) was shopping around a concept movie for a new Battlestar movie/series. It built from the novels and abandoned "Galactica: 1980". For one thing, it was pretty clear the guy had been bitten by the Hollywood bug way back when, and was wanting another flash of celebrity. He wanted it to reunite all the original cast. The guy playing Adama was dead, so Apollo would have taken over, etc.
The problem was that it was the same old story. Cylons hunt the fleet, appear, chase good guys, Baltar (or some other human sympathizer) cackles and helps give a face to things, good guys fend off the Cylons, story goes on. The only thing different is that the heroes are older and the special effects were better. At the time, there were rumors SciFi was doing the new series, and Hatch was railing against it. But the original Starbuck didn't want any part of Hatch's movie/pilot. Most of the rest of the cast didn't either.
Apparently he came around, having done a guest cameo on the new series. But I imagine the powers that be took a long hard look at the old Battlestar formula and decided to do it differently. Dig into the details, tell a story rather than a 70's repeating plot.
