They're selling 512MB of PC2100 RAM for $60(This includes a lifetime warranty, wtf?).

Anyone know why it's so cheap?

(1) PC2100.
(2) They're maybe making $1.50 off of it. At most.
(3) They make money on volume.

It's called Elixir brand RAM.

It's got a lifetime warranty, but it's the absolute cheapest shit imaginable. When I had to clean the RMA office out of all the old parts laying around, I had a huge bag full of ram, and maybe 3/4ths of it was Elixir brand ram.

I mean, I'm a fan of generic RAM and all, but this stuff is the cheapest. When it works it works fine, but it's frequently DOA.

Basically, there are brands of ram that do sell extremely cheap. We sell PC2100 here for about $60-70

On the other hand, 1GB of g.skill LE TCCD memory module @ PC4400 is $250. It's all relative to the quality of what you purchase.

I'm still convinced that after a certain point along the "ram quality" scale, the only thing that increases is the profit margin.

Keep in mind "you get what you pay for".

This phrase applies to many products, RAM being one of them.

I personally don't buy ram unless it's from Crucial's website.

Hmm? The bus speed of the RAM does actually vary depending on what is being advertised?

Generic ram outperforms crucial 100 to 1.

When interviewed after playtesting generic ram, one tester was quoted as saying

I'm talking more about Crucial's new "christmas tree" doodad ram with blinky lights and flagrantly overembelleshed heat spreaders and crap that performs exactly the same as some regular pseudo-generic SuperTalent.

Neat, I just bought a 512 stick from them, but mine had none of those bells & whistles.

Oh, I agree with that. I don't even have heatspreaders.

I'm not sure Crucial uses TCCD right now though, so I wouldn't even consider it.

Kingston, personally.

Although I've never bought from the Kingston or Crucial websites. I've always bought through ASI, Synnex and Ingram Micro.

Although I'm sure if/when I depart this establishment I'll go back to ordering from newegg or just going over to CompUSSR or Fried to get it.

Dunno, it's not THAT cheap. I got 512mb of PC2700 for 30 bucks at Comp USA a bit ago.

Yeah, but I deal with their website. When it's not being slow or broken it's not bad.

I bought a cheap stick of ram from Newegg, can't remember the brand but it was 67 dollars for a pc 3200 stick of 512. Seems to be working just fine to me. It came wrapped in 15 times it's width in bubblewrap.

I'm a Kingston man. It's the only brand of RAM that I've never gotten a bad/DOA stick of.

I'm not going to carry a torch of quality or anything, I've just had better luck with them than Crucial or 'house' brands.

Corsair all the way for me. I love being able to run the memory timings where I want with these sticks and them not blow up.

A gig of Kingston value ram 2700 in my current comp. I overclocked the FSB on the first stick(had one at the time) pretty far with no trouble. Apparently Crucial originally sold rebranded Kingston as well.

I've ordered Kingston RAM from them before for a good price. And the nice thing with newegg is their return policy on DOA is very good, and they're very cooperative about it all.

The RAM I bought was almost twice the price at Best Buy. The exact. Same. Stick.

I've become a fan of Mushkin RAM myself. My friend and I are both running the 1gb 3200 pack, though the price has dropped since we both ordered ours from NewEgg. I've never gotten bad RAM from a store, from friends ocassionally, but I'm never building anything important or paying anything with second hand RAM.

Yeah Lyinar and I have had issues at times with stuff we've gotten (sometimes it was just a bum unit, sometimes we had issues with it at our end) and they always take that sucker back. Work with us, too. Pretty cool.
