Yes, I am behind in the times, unfortunately. I'm also no computer expert. But I do need suggestions on LCDs. I have a big old box that came with the Windows95 my Dad bought so long ago. Since I'll be moving out soon, I do need one of my own to take with me. Honestly, I'm clueless here. I've been browsing NewEgg with a spending limit of $400. 15" is the smallest I want to go. Any ideas? I'd appreciate it muchly.

We buy two kinds of LCD panels at work: Acer and AOC.

Acer we buy as a slightly more expensive "name brand" even though they're sorta like Samsung in that they're more of a "bargain brand" that doesn't sacrifice quality.

AOC we buy as a less expensive, quasi-generic brand.

I highly reccomend either manufacturer. Both have shown not only stellar reliability and remarkable clarity and image accuracy, but both have top notch warranties and warranty service. Of all the LCD manufacturing companies I've dealt with (including sony among others) they've been the easiest to deal with, and it's on my reccomendation that we buy these brands.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but if you're on a budget and particularly if you're into gaming, I'd strongly warn you away from an LCD. The technology still suffers latency, brightness, and native resolution woes. If you go flat CRT with the same budget, you'll be able to get the same or better image quality and a larger viewing area and still pay much less.

No one should flame you for that, it's entirely true.

I've been selling customer's Advueu LCD monitors recently... you'll be looking at the range of $300 to $330 for a 17" with speakers.

The speakers kinda suck, but the monitor is overall pretty good. I'd consider buying one and I'm pretty damn picky about monitors.

Model number is ADV178, www.advueu.com

I do agree with Maradon, in that if you're on a budget, then you probably want to stick with CRTs. LCDs can be very very nice, but they tend to not fit the "kick ass" bill in that sub-$400 range.

I would only recommend one if you have a very small, unexpandable work space or if you move your monitor often.

i agree with MAradon. If you can't go all the way and drop a good 600 or 700 bucks on an LCD, go with a CRT instead. You need to drop a good bit to get a low refresh rate and such.

You get flamed when you flat out say a CRT isn't worth it because they are if you can afford em

The way I see it there will ALWAYS be something better to spend the ~$400 difference between a good LCD and a great CRT on.

As I realized I needed a portable monitor, I recently acquired an LCD when my CRT burnt out. I'm very happy with it so far. It is the Samsung SyncMaster 710n and it cost me $298.70 total. It's a 17in monitor, refresh rate 12ms (fastest I've seen) 600:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 300cd/mm^2. I'm pretty happy with it, though some may find its maximum supported resolution of 1280x1024 to be troubling. That is its only limitation; I have not seen any ghosting nor have I had eye strain to deal with, though the max resolution doesn't bother me because that is what I run at anyway.
