After my jaw surgery on the 23rd my teeth have been rubberbanded shut. I was trying to keep on top of a liquid diet. I knew I wasn't "eating" enough but I didn't realize I was cutting it so thin... I lost 15 pounds in a week. Being 6' tall and weighing only 135 lbs is kind of scary knowing there's another week or two of this diet left before I can move on to solids...

Nothing seems very appetizing if I can't chew it. I've basically been drinking a lot of water, juice, "cream of" soups, boullion, and Ensure or stuff similar to Ensure. I got a few of the premade fruit shake things, too, which are ok, but all this stuff is getting kind of old. I need some ideas for decent tasting, very fattening liquid items, please. Everyone says "just put stuff into a blender" but you'd be surprised how poorly this works in terms of consistency and really it's to be avoided as much as possible. I need stuff that you could swallow if you were clenching your teeth shut... in other words it needs to be like a liquid with little particles.

Waisz, my mom had to have that done when she was younger also, i'll ask her what she ate.

As for fattening: Try pudding, maybe. Tasty and liquid-ish.

You need to have a good blender for that to work... and generally have to strain the results a bit.

My dad basically did what you're already doing when his jaws were WIRED shut after some surgery was done. Unfortunately I was too young to remember anything but him eating LOTS of soup and growling in general when he was pissed because he couldn't yell.

Beep. Beep. Beep... Ohh... I think my porridge is done.

Blender is a great idea! You can make soup bases in a blender and then heat is up...or if you have a juicer you can get your recomended doses of veggies and fruits in juice form.

You're a trooper! You can do it!

Diet shakes are a natural. They're made to replace meals allready, so they're a good start. Just don't stick to the diet, drink extra if you feel the need.

Someone I know needed to put on some weight, and the doctor told him to drink those WITH his meals instead of in place of, so it should work for you too.

Now, for other things, might I suggest you check out the babyfood isle? Buy a jar of anything that sounds good and is made for babies just starting on solid food. You may have to dilute/thin some of it some, but I'm sure you can find a broth or juce that would work well with it. Also, you might want to look for a hand powered machine that can make that kind of baby food, if you want to make some stuff like that yourself.

Sorry, I just voted your thread a 2. I'd take it back if I could!

Anyway, diet drinks are pretty much where it's at. They scale from about 300 calories a can to...a lot of calories a can. Try them.

Of course, they can be kind of nasty, but sometimes you've gotta.

Oatmeal (or cream of wheat), fruit juice, vegetable juice, and a meal replacement shake (or just reduced fat milk if you can't be bothered) from a nutrition store should work in terms of raw nutrition. As for decent tasting fattening liquids: can you say milkshake? Blend well and enjoy, ol' buddy.

It also possible you may have a protein deficiency unless you're getting more dairy than I think. Protein whey (also available in nutrition stores) makes its most useful application here. The texture is interesting at best, but it tastes like ice cream and is chock full of easily-absorbed proteins that will make sure as little muscle as possible will be catabolized during your diet.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. A health food store may be a good key to making this work.

Unfortunately, even some Oatmeal is too thick to make it. I tried the packet oatmeal today and it was a little too thick until I had seriously watered it down, at which point all the oatmeal liquid made it through but the little apple pieces that were part of the packet did not. I'm sure just the liquid is probably good but it probably doesn't compare to the nutrition from getting all of it.

Shakes and smoothies are good though, heh. I just need to be more creative about the flavors, I think.

I drink these on a daily basis. The low-carb ones taste vaguely like eggs, while the normal ones taste vaguely like pancakes. They aren't chalky like other health shakes I've tried (though I haven't tried protein shakes specifically).

If you haven't tried this yet, buy some yogurt. Don't get fruit-on-the-bottom kind (though you probably knew that). The custard style ones from Yoplait are really tasty, and have the consistency of pudding (which is thicker than their other ones).

I may be joining you in a few hours *shivers*. exactly two hours, to be more spacific. first cavity ever.

fazum has the best advice, other than the baby food thign. i'd say consult a nutritionist or a doctor if you are losing that much weight. a good reason for this is that there may be things in your diet such as certain vitamans and minerals or whatever that you may not be getting now that you have a liquid diet.

boost shakes come in diffrent flavors if that helps. no one mentioned applesauce, it seems obvious to me as at least something

edit: there's no reason to drink low carb stuff, especially in your situation. your body needs carbs for many reasons... for someone healing like you, protien and carbs = good.

edit2: you may want to start counting your claoric intake, as well as the amount of fat/protien/carbs/whatever.

edit3: Don't start gouging fatting stuff just to gain weight, it's not the type of weight you want.

I took very ill freshman year, and lost fifty pounds in a couple months. I couldn't keep anything I ate down, so I had to go on a liquid diet. Suddar's advice is right on; if it weren't for Slimfast, I would be an emaciated little twig.

The taste gets better after about a week of having it for every meal.

My wife had problems gaining weight when she was pregnant with our first little one. Her doctor suggested the instant breakfast drinks that our Doc above suggested. Also Jello in a partially set form is a good idea for the protien. Health food weight gain formulas are out there too that are high in protien.

My mother has been mixing health drinks in with ice cream and various other sweet things for my sister. My sister finds it a lot more enjoyable to consume that way.

Other than that, there's nothing she mentioned beyond what's already been mentioned here.

My orthodontist wanted to do that to me... Just so that my teeth would line up from the WHOLE 1mm they were off by.. I got a second opinion and he said that she was a psycho sadist. Well, not in so many words.. It just seemed strange that she told 3 patients that day while I was in the room that they needed to have their jaws broken...

None of my front teeth were useful for chewing before the surgery once the braces had been on for a while. There was a huge gap in my bite. I couldn't chew thin things like deli slices using my front teeth because it just passed through.

here's what I would do:

Breakfast? Oatmeal, in a blender (yes. blend the fucking oatmeal.) then add milk, blend again and drink.

lunch? no clue, I was thinking blending creamy peanute butter with soaked bread, but I would rather starve than eat that crap.

Dinner? Something fatty, I would say mix pudding with icecream, then let it melt so you dont hurt your teeth.

And water, drink lots of water, non-citrus fruit juice (hint: apple.), and milk.

Edit: I to be spealszing good.
