I got a CD-R with Knoppix 3.1 from school for my Operating Systems class. Trouble is, I can't get a display.

Booting from CD, I only get to where the OS prompts me for boot parameters. I hit enter, it loads up stuff etc. But when I go to choose a display mode, it seems that either my video card, monitor, or both are completely unsupported by Knoppix. My computer continues to run fine, but there's no display at all.

Would anyone happen to know how to fix this, or am I pretty screwed?

(Video card is Sapphire RADEON 9600XT 256MB, btw.)

Try hitting ctrl-alt-backspace and see if you get a terminal out of that.

I've never used Knoppix, but that'll kick you out of X, which may not be configured correctly.

Still nothing. Thanks, though.

Do you need X (GUI) support?

If so, see if there's an option to make it use a default VGA or VESA driver.
If not, there's an option at boot to just boot into text mode.

If it's KNOPPIX it should be kicking off into a Framebuffer console. You might be having issues with that, which I've seen happen quite often if the CD isn't quite up-to-date..

It should load LILO as the boot loader. If you hit the F2 or F3 keys it should give you more info on what you can do. Odds are, you can type 'linux nofb' (without quotes of course) at the 'boot:' prompt and it should fire up without invoking the framebuffer console and allow you to play with it from there.
