Once again, I need suggestions for books!
Anything that isn't intended for people under the age of four(Harry Potter falls into this category -ed) or has Fabio on the cover is open season.
Though I'm still strapped for a good darker, more mature "high fantasy" book/series.

If you like that, then go to her Hythrun Chronicles. Its not as good as Second Sons though.

I second this.
Going Postal wasn't bad, but I fear Pratchet is getting a bit formulaic with his books.
Just read the inside cover. If ya dig it, get it. If not, don't look back. Just run.
I could sing praise for this series all night, I discovered it a few months ago. Overlly chivalrous smartass, Dresden is Chicago's only wizard in the yellow pages, he makes a living doing various odd jobs around the city with his magical skills to try and keep himself fed. Also has by far the most interesting and believable representations of magic I've ever seen.
I reccommend at least reading a few chapters of it in-store to see if you like it, the entire book is from a first person narrative which may not be for everyone. Vorago fucked around with this message on 11-18-2004 at 08:04 PM.
Also, the author's name might be spelled wrong since i'm trying to recall it from work. Dr. Gee fucked around with this message on 11-18-2004 at 08:13 PM.
The Vampire Chronicles. I recently read them, and got a lot more out of them than when I tried to read them as younger person.
You asked for High Fantasy, which doesn't really apply here. But darker and more mature is definately a theme here, and if you're able to feel with the book, then you can get a lot out of it.

Only one applies here: Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun" Series. Though it'll require a dictionary to get through it.

I read one of her books like a year ago and it was pretty cool. I forget what it was called, though. I'm thinking it was Vittorio the Vampire or something like that. I named a WR Shadow Knight after him, even!

Any chance I could borrow these? I'd treat them real nice and take care of them like they're my own.
No, Really. Bite me.

THESE ARE AWESOME! The latest in the series ( Blood Rights ) was bestest! Though, I think Grave Peril was pretty nifty, too.
And if you get the chance, Butcher has released the first book of another series that's told in the more traditional third person. It's hard to believe they're written by the same person! But it's very good, nonetheless, and I think that it's worth the cash. Furies of Calduron I think it's called...Not one hundred percent sure on that. It's much more fantasy oriented, with various races and old lands and all that jazz. And everyone has Furies, which are basically elementals. Niiiifty stuff.

I read all of these recently. The Vampire Lestat is my favorite, though I liked Vittorio almost as much. I liked that he was a "separate" vampire and had nothing to do with the other books in the series.
However, if you enjoyed the Queen Of the Damned movie, prepare to be completely befuddled by the book, because it's very different. And as is almost always the case...much better.
As for recs...I'm not sure if you've read it (if you haven't...HURRY UP!) but The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is sheer brilliance. I haven't read anything really in the FANTASY genre recently outside of the first book of the Drizzt D'Oruden (forgot how to spell his last name) series. Which...if dark elves are your thing, is alright.
