Johnny Depp could very well surpass Gene Wilder's performance given his acting in Pirates of the Carribbean. And I can only hope Tim Burton stays true to form.
I'm going to see it! I'm going to see it!

The creepy Depp put forth in Secret Window is not the same kind of Wilder creepy. Sorry.
There's a slim chance that Depp might surpass Wilder (a feat, to be sure) and if he does, it could be the best thing ever. If he doesn't, however, it will be the worst movie of all time.
I think a big part of what would make it is how they'll do everything else. CGI oompa loompas, anyone?
I don't think that it can be better, but it can be different. Gene Wilder was awesome. Johnny Depp is great, and he has so much talent, but the original will always be the one I think of. This will be the Willy Wonka for a new generation, I am sure.
I'm more worried about Burton will handle the movie though. Will he stay true to the old movie or make it more like Dahl's original book? Dahl hated the movie version afterall. That could have a big effect on the storyline.

As much as I enjoy a Johnny Depp movie, nothing will ever surpass Gene Wilder. Depp will do the job credit though.

I've been looking forward to that. Deth and I plan to see it. I'm a fan of Burton. I think he can definitely pull off the setting.
Yeah Burton doesn't have to be morbid. He's more of a "macabre" sort, but it doesn't necessarily have to be sick. "Nightmare Before Christmas" for instance was definitely a child's film. Macabre, but not horror by any stretch of the imagination.
Plus I think Depp will work well. Frankly, if it's got Depp working with Burton, I don't think you can really go wrong. If it's more faithful to the original book, fantastic. If it's a remake of the old movie, it should still be fun.

From what I understand, Burton wanted to make this movie as close to the original book as possible, as opposed to the musical version, which is very loosely based upon the story.
I still can't wait.

His face looks really pale in the poster. Other than that, I really REALLY want to see this movie.
I thought 'he' was a 'she' at first glance.
Personally, I'm not too wild about Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, the original movie, or Dahl's books. If I see this, it will be after its out on DVD.

I'm curious about the title though. Is this going to be a remake of Willy Wonka or is going to be kind of a sequel where it's Charlie who is grown up and in charge now?
The book was originally "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", so.
