I'm sick of my mom always hopping onto my computer to use the net so we decided to go wireless so she can use the computer in her office without having to start drilling holes through walls for cables to run through.

I know jack shit about setting a wireless router up or even what would be a good router to buy, so information on both topics would be appreciated.

Buy this, plus a wireless network card for each PC. Insert cards into PCs, insert your internet connection (cable or dsl modem?) into router, turn everything on.

You may want to secure the connection with a WEP key, but that's a slightly more advanced topic and not neccessary for it to function.

New Linksys routers make it very easy to set it up, even if you don't know what you're doing. Linksys has done a good job at making it user friendly recently.

I agree with going linksys but dont' buy in to the speed-booster crap. It doesn't work as well as they claim. Very easy to set up their equipment.

I have that exact router. I love it.

Works well with both PC based and Apple based computers.

Ugh, tele-sales... how do you put up with the 5 million calls a day for GQ Media, and the "$199 computer"? I'd kill myself. At least on the floor I can just point and let them figure it out themselves...

I rez because i need new info.

Does the type of wireless Ethernet cards i get matter at all? Like, do they need to match with the router?

If your router is 802.11g, then your wireless cards can be either 802.11b or 802.11g

If your router is 802.11b, then your wireless cards can be either 802.11b or 802.11g

edit: g is the fastest, but it's backwards compatible with b.

edit 2: all kinds of info here

edit 3: if you meant brand, then no. As long as it's either 802.11b or 802.11g
