No, I had no idea. Ashkenazi or Sephardic, which tribe?
I'm Ashkenazi on both sides of the family. My father's side is Scottish, English, and a tiny bit of German. (Guess which part was Jewish ) His lines go back to the tribe of Benjamin, thus the two first names I have. No one believes me when I tell them that's my last name. My mother's side I don't know the tribe, but we're Austro-Hungarian/Polish/Russian. I have Israeli family members who keep inviting me back to the Holy Land but I don't plan on going.

It is for Jews because of the long standing tradition of intrafaith marriage that goes back to the original tribes of Israel. I'll always be a Jew, but I practice faith as a Buddhist. In fact, that sort of conversion happens more often than you might think.

Religion isn't hereditary.
Nor is culture.
This kind of attitude is at the root of most of the world's hatred and racial tension.

I have no hatred for my Semitic brothers, and I don't know how you can even make that statement. Our shared history with the Arabs should unite us rather than cause tension. If anything it's our lack of understanding of this bond that creates so much confusion. Some Arabs, to this day, harbor ill feelings toward the Jews because of Biblical stories of Abraham's illegitimate Arab son, Ishmael, being cast out and denied the covenant. So, I fail to see your reasoning. It just so happened that a people of the same faith married within the same communities for hundreds of years that we have certain genetic traits and heritage. [We Jews even have a disease that only occurs between two Ashkenazi Jewish parents which afflicts their children.] I would agree that in MOST cases religion is not hereditary, but this is one such exception. There are others too.
Respectfully, I ask that we agree to disagree on the matter in public, but should you like to learn more about it, I would gladly explain it further in private.
[Edit: To be fair, I shouldn't say ONLY. Tay Sachs and Canavan Disease is also found in other ethnicities but is FAR more prevalent in the Ashkenazi community. 1 in every 30 Ashkenazi Jews carries Tay Sachs, while 1 in 300 carries it in other groups. Canavan Disease is 1 in every 40 Ashkenazi, while 1 in 400 for others groups.] Ian Benjamin fucked around with this message on 09-17-2004 at 02:15 PM.

Obviously. Perhaps you should read what I say more closely, and consult reference works so you better understand religion and culture, not to mention genetics. It just so happened that a people of the same faith married within the same communities for hundreds of years that we have certain genetic traits and heritage. We Jews even have a disease that only occurs between two Ashkenazi Jewish parents which afflicts their children. So? That has nothing to do with your religion. I would agree that in MOST cases religion is not hereditary, but this is one such exception. There are others too. Please don't be nonsensical. Religion is in no way hereditary. Culture is in no way hereditary. Just because a group of people who like and believe the same things intermarry over a long period, thus reinforcing genetic flaws, doesn't mean that religion is hereditary.Respectfully, I ask that we agree to disagree on the matter in public, but should you like to learn more about it, I would gladly explain it further in private. Ah, no. Should you like to wake up and discuss the topic intelligently, feel free, but leave off with the condescending offers to educate me in private. Perhaps, instead of simply assuming I have no idea what I'm talking about, you'd like to point out where my logic is flawed or my facts incorrect?

Religion is a choice. You mentioned yourself that you've chosen Buddhism. There is no gene for religion; it is a personal choice.
Culture is simply a set of societal standards. A series of learned behaviors. Again, there is no gene for culture; it is learned. A perfect example of this is found in a language study done years ago--a particular Eskimo language has two sounds that are indistinguishable to people not of the tribe. . .but researchers found that all babies had the ability to distinguish between the two sounds up until a certain age, where they couldn't if they hadn't been raised around the language.
A quick look at your hypersensitive response to poor Diadem shows that you aren't really considering this topic logically. The bottom line: the world would be a much better place if people understood that religion and culture are choices rather than somehow genetic.

On your first point I agree, religion is something you choose, it is not genetic in the literal sense. Although, I didn't have much choice as a child, I still see your point. Still, you might agree that the Jews are an ethnicity, are they not? What I'm driving at is that my family, both immediate and extended (being Jewish) IS my heritage and culture at home. As much as I practice the Buddhist faith, my unbringing in a religious Jewish private school is an undeniable influence, right?
On the point about culture I also agree, but I guess the way I look at culture is a bit more broad. Socialization of culture takes place even in colleges, but it begins first at the home, which is where I was socialized by a Jewish culture. See what I mean?
I'm not sure what you meant by your third comment. Do you mean the Jewish joke he made? When I used the term "goyem", I meant it affectionately because I assumed he wasn't of the faith, I was wrong. I don't know what that has to do with logic though. It's just that I'm so used to being approached by Gentiles about my religion that it's a rarity to find practicing Jews where I live. Most of my friends in the public school system liked to playfully tease me with Jewish jokes. Some were funny, others were hurtful, albeit unintentional. Force of habit that I responded the way I did, and for that I apologize if Diadem took offense. That will also be something I consider on Yom Kippur.

Treating religion or culture as inseparable from one's humanity is incredibly destructive.

Bloodsage had this to say about Duck Tales:
You've just conceded my entire point, if I read this correctly.Treating religion or culture as inseparable from one's humanity is incredibly destructive.
Essentially, I don't really disagree with you on most of these points, never did, but we both misunderstood each other. It would seem that we only disagree on a level of semantics. This was an error on my part for not taking the time to define my terms more clearly.
My point was that Trahyrn could indeed be "part jew" ethnically when he didn't know it, despite lacking practice of the faith or intimate knowledge of the traditions. I might not have made that very clear when I started discussing it.
For example my father's father was an orphaned Jew, but as an orphan he was raised to be Protestant and never learned of his "ethnic Jew" heritage. Not until my father was in his 40s did he learn of his Jewish blood, ironically, after he had converted from Protestantism to Judaism to marry my Jewish mother. My grandfather, my father, and I are all "ethnic Jews" even though we aren't JewISH by faith.
The attitude of "once a Jew, always a Jew" is a refuge for a people who have been systematically spat on throughout history. It really just means that there will always be a community to belong to as family when in need. It was always a positive attitude, never meant to be religiously self-righteous or nationalistic like how radical Zionism is viewed. I turned my back on the faith, not the people. Does that make sense?
