Is it all ready, or already? I used to use already, but I seem to remember an english lit professor telling me that it should not be used. Which is true?

ie I all ready did it. or I already did it.

Ahh ok. I probably didn't correctly hear what he said, and tbh it sounded pretty dumb, which is why I was checking. Thanks.

"Everyone's already," is wrong. "Everyone's all ready," is right.

"I did it all ready," is wrong. "I did it already," is right.

"All ready," denotes a state of complete preparedness. To say, "I did it all ready," doesn't make any sense. However, to say something like, "The ninjas are all aready to flip the fuck out and kill some people," would be correct.

"Already," is an adverb meaning to be done at some previous time. "I did it already," is proper grammar. "The Power Glove is already to instill the fear of god into its foes," is wrong.

Note, however, that the sentence, "The Power Glove will already instill the fear of god into its foes," is correct.

EDIT: It! IT! IT!

Sentow previously (dare I say it... already ) clarified this, but some people appear confuzzled still... so I shall attempt to clear it up a little more.

Noxhil, in your example above, the second statement is grammatically correct, while the first is not.

"I already did it" implies that you have completed the task prior to being requested to perform it.

"I all ready did it" makes no grammatic sense..
- all implies a complete number of something..
- ready in this sense implies that you are prepared to do the task, while did implies that you have completed it

Effectively you said:

"I everything am prepared completed it"... to which any real English Lit professor would reply "what.the.fuck.yo?"

HOWEVER:

in the context of say, "are you all ready to go to the beach?" or "are you already to go to the beach?" then the first usage is the correct one.

"Are you all ready to go to the beach?" queries if you have completed every preparation before departure.

"Are you already to go to the beach?" implies that you have previously been to the beach, yet you are also preparing to go at the same time..

Effectively the second sentance reads: "are you previously gone to go to the beach?".. and again the prof should be looking at you and saying "wtfy?" if you used it in this manner.

In conclusion Noxhil, it depends on the circumstances of the use of each term.... and your English Lit professor is a complete moron with no grasp of the basic concepts of grammatical sentence structure or the English language.. (which is quite ironic given what he is trying to teach )

[Edit:] Much typos corrected...

Either way you spell it, it's a weird saying. Like "beats me," i.e.
"Do you think he'll like this?"
"Beats me."
English is full of weird little sayings, like all languages. Learning Japanese and their weird little sayings (Like gomen nasai, "forgive me" being more common than "I'm sorry") made me realize how many weird sayings we have ourselves. Isn't the process of literary evolution fun?!
