I have two armies, 4000 pt. Orc and 3000 pt. Dark Elf (my more recent). I also play 40k rarely, but find Fantasy to be a whole lot more fun, honestly.
Anyways, just wanted to check if there's any like-minded out there.
Currently have: 1 regiment Corsairs, 1 regiment Black Guard, 1 Malus Darkblade because that's what the store had at the time.
Any suggestions on the Dark Elves and stuff? And I know it's been asked and answered before, but suggestions on paint types? Going for cost-effectiveness on the paint.
So, yeah

Well, you should get a minimum of 2 reaper bolt throwers for any army, really. Black Guard are okay, but very expensive, and I prefer to use the Rare choice to field a hydra. I assume you want to collect up for a 2000 point army, since that's the regular game size?
Corsairs are a good unit, and have the advantage of being core, which is nice, since almost every other good unit is Special or Rare. You should definitely buy a couple units of crossbowmen, maybe some Dark Riders. A hydra is a good alternative to Black Guard on the rare slot, but you should probably field your Black Guard if you already have them. Executioners are dirt cheap for their efficency. Witch Elves are a bit eh. Some people swear by them, but I've found them way too fragile with no save whatsoever. They do pack a punch, though.
As DE, you have access to some very nice spells, but your magic isn't make or break, so you should probably keep the amount of sorceresses in your army low. Dark Elves are expensive and pretty frail, so every point saved in characters counts.
Most people won't allow special characters when you play, so I suggest using Malus as a cold one leader of some sort, or a Noble/Highborn, wutevah. Cold One knights are a kickass regiment that can mop up almost anything and shrug off enemy missile fire.
My own 2000 point list is as follows:
- Noble on Cold One. (General)
- 2 Level 2 Sorceress.
- 9 Cold One Knights.
- 1 Cold One Chariot.
- 20 Corsairs.
- 16 Executioners.
- 2x10 Warriors with Crossbows.
- 2 Reaper Bolt Throwers.
- 1 War Hydra.
- 5 Harpies.
With 3000, I slap in a High Sorceress on a Dark Pegasus, etc. My army mixes good shooting with decent magic and some tough hand-to-hand, which works rather well. You really shouldn't try to go fully shooty or fully h2h with Dark Elves, they just aren't good enough at either.
As for painting, I use a blue/black/gold scheudle, since I'm aiming for the Black Ark Raiders look. I use Games Workshop's paints, it's really best, and doesn't cost that much more.
If I were to say what you would buy, I would recommend in the following order:
- 1 Sorceress Zaza fucked around with this message on 09-05-2004 at 05:50 PM.
- 20 Warriors with Crossbows
- 20 Warriors with Spears (Useful sometimes, they are a good, cheap Core. Keep in mind that Warriors were revised down to 7 points when they released Storm of Chaos.)
- Fill out to 20 Corsairs if you don't have already.
- Reapers.
- Dark Riders/Cold One Knights
- 1 Sorceress
- Executioners.
- Harpies/Shades
I originally got into WFB for the painting side of things, but have been playing actively for the last three years.
I've ~4000 points of Khemri, and 2500 points of Tzeentch Demons (specifically for the Storm of Chaos Demonic Legion list). Dark Elves were my original army, but I found them incredibly difficult to use as a new player.
From what I've seen of 40k...it appears to be a much simpler game compared to WFB.
I have about 3500 points worth of Britonianns. I rarely play anymore since the army got gimped when they did away with the old lance formation.
It is still impressive to field a fully painted army of knights. My opponents quake in fear at the number of...

HORSES! I have in my army. Yes it is true, the horses kill more things than the damn knights do.
