Everything was fine today... until about mid-day. I couldn't connect to my home PC - I didn't think much of it. I figured it probably rebooted itself, or the DSL hiccuped during a storm and was yet to return.

Around 2, my parents called and told me it was down. I told them to call Qwest, they did. Qwest told them the DSL account had been shut down, but they re-activated it. The billing dept. gave us a time of 72 hours for it to be back up. When we complained, they transferred us to the DSL dept, who gave us a 2-4 hour ETA as to when it'd be fixed.

5 hours later, it's still down. We call back, they say it won't be back up for 5 business days. I told them, that's not acceptable - I need something sooner. They wouldn't do jack shit.

Comcast, OTOH, will get me a brand-new account set up and working as of Saturday. So, out with the old, in with the Cable modem. The good news, is that I'm going to be upgrading to a Comcast commercial account. 1.5 mbit bi-directional account (My DSL was 1.0 mbit bi-directional).

The downside, is the commercial account won't be set up for a while. Until then, I'll be on a residential account. 384 kbit upstream Even when I DO get the commercial account, it's still unknown if I'll have a static IP, which annoys me to no end. I hate that dynamic DNS service thing, that lets me assign a domain name to a dynamic IP address, but it looks like that'll be my only method of reliably getting people connected to the FTP after I get the commercial account.

So, there you have it. I'm pissed off to no end at Qwest - takes an hour to turn off service, but god help you if you want to turn it back on...

Wow usually companies bend ass backwards if they hear that you're going to change internet providers. When I had problems with sympatico, I called said cancel my account I'm sending everything back and going with Rogers (main competition). They said we'll call you back in 5 mins, they called me back, offered unlimited bandwidth for 6 months, an upgraded account to Ultra (3 down, 1.5 up) for 3 months, and they'd be imediately working to fix the problem. They kept all that and my DSL service was returned to normal after 2 hours.

If it's commercial, I don't see why it wouldn't be static. Hell, my IP is static.

I don't understand why they would say "I'm sorry sir, but the service will not be back up for another five days." or something along those line. Do they not realize that businesses use their service to communicate half-way around the world? (I'm making some large presumptions, but you know what I mean).

Saying to a customer that it won't be 5 days until its ready is completely unacceptable, and would sway them to stop using said service. Unless lightning had struck and destroyed some integral part of the system.

However it's good to hear that you will be getting a better service Sucky that it will take a while.

I use qwest DSL at my moms. It's not as fast as Cox cable all around (slower down, slower up) but at least it's fucking reliable. For the past 2 weeks my cable has been on the fritz, it'll drop for 4 or 5 hours at a time, and they don't do jack shit about it. I don't care if a transformer blew out a month ago, that shits been backed up, and you're dropping my fucking internet for half my waking day at home. It pisses me off to no end.
What's this thing do?
That would be sooo cool if it wasn't going to hurt us.

Roadrunner was rocky at first for me (for the first year here) but since then it has been solid.

But...when I go back to school, I have to use Roadrunner for a couple months till the college runs network lines out to the new apartments hopefully it is fairly fast there, though I have a bad feeling about it -- with about 150 students on the same node pretty much...my speed will get shot all to hell :/

Today is fun!

Call up Qwest. Demand a refund and demand to cancel service.

Four different phone numbers later, I still have service (that doesn't work), and I lack a refund.

I guess that since Qwest won't bend over ass-backwards to please me, they'll just make it as hard as humanly possible for me to get rid of the service, so they hope I'll keep it out of sheer frustration.

Its possible to get a static IP with Comcast, and it normally only costs a few more dollars a month. I know Comcast has a 3 down/1.5 up residential account service in many areas for not much more than a normal account as well. . So it seems strange that you'll only have a 1.5/1.5 commercial service.

As it turns out, apparently in this area they don't offer ANY statuc IP's. And the commercial service available for me, is only either 4m down / 382kb up, or 5m down / 512 kb up.

I used to have 1m/1m DSL. So the cable service in my area blows.

That sounds really strange. It sounds like you're going through one of the AT&T turned Comcast areas then. That's different from any of the normal services I know of.

You know, about two years ago, I called up and asked how much a T1 would be.

$600 a month.

That's one entire paycheck for me. If I did that, I wouldn't be able to afford college.

As far as I can tell, I've always had a non-static IP that mostly stays static, because it only changes when I re-dial the modem.. which never happens, since the router is always on.

Maybe yours will be like that?
